You should not bake.
We've covered this before.
Here's another reason why.
When the recipe says "Sift in the dry ingredients", there is a very good reason for that.
And you being lazy is not excuse not to do it.
I know, I know, it was way past your bedtime. And the only reason you were baking at all was because you just remembered you'd put your name on the playgroup morning tea roster. For the next day.
You could have just popped in to the bulk baked goods section of Woolies.
But no. Home baked muffins were called for.
But, in neglecting to sift the ingredients, you ended up with lumps of brown sugar, mixed with vegetable oil, which caused the sugar to go rock hard. Somewhat.... caramelized.
And roughly the same size, shape and color as the frozen blueberries you had previously put in the muffin mix.
Not enough ingredients to start over. And too stubborn to admit defeat and show up baked-good-less....
Only one viable solution.
Hand mixed muffins. Each lump of brown sugar individually hand sifted out.
It took you quite a long time, didn't it?
Next time, sift the bloody sugar. OK? OK.
Yours in rampant stupidity,

lol Brown Sugar sucks balls lol. Sometimes it's even hard to get out of the packet, and you'll be damned if you try removing it from a measuring cup after you've packed it in.
Good save Lori!
Sugar needs to be sifted??? I crush any pre-existing lumps with a spoon, but that's it.
I've never sifted sugar in my life. Flour and cocoa yes, but never sugar.
Hehehe. I hear you, dude. Same thing happened to me when I first experimented with the brownies. But now, I am Teh Master Brownie Bakerer! Seriously, I am!
Playgroups are way too much pressure, I just bring a box of graham crackers and call it good! =)
Maybe it's just the *pleasantly plump* American in me speaking, but had they NOT been for children, I would've just left the lumps of sugar. Who doesn't want to bite into a muffin and get a big sugary gift like that?? I say this was an EPIC WIN!!
Tip - put a piece of white bread in the container with your brown sugar and it wont go all hard and lumpy.... and then you wont need to sift it. Problem solved!
I never sift.
This post explains the lumps.
I'm a baking fool.
But know I am wiser and it's all because of you.
Are you supposed to be making home made clay? I bet you could plaster a few holes in the wall with that stuff.
Love you Lori!
Another reason I don't bake. Bloody brown sugar. Good on you for rescuing the muffins. It takes a real trooper.
hahaha.
You sift to airrate the dry ingredients and thus help your muffins to rise. I hope they rose! (and tasted nice! Although i'm sure they still tasted great.)
Next time, go shopping! lol
This is probably not the place to tell you that you don't typically sift brown sugar, is it? Right. Okay. You can also buy little clay thingies to put in the package to keep it from going hard. Or just go to Woolies. :-P
Most my brown sugar ever gets is a bit of a break-up with a fork. I'm a lazy sifter too. Oooh that sounds like an ace insult.
I feel your pain.... And it always happens when it's way past your bedtime...
Lol. I never sift. Ever, ever. It never bodes well for me and yet I continue to skip that step!
You don't need to tell me. I religiously don't do baking. I have two boys. So they don't do baking either.
Sit down, put your feet up and buy some jaffa cakes next time ;<)

Oh my. LOL. I'm a keen sifter. Saves so much work, you see...
Oh, man, all that wasted sifting and massaging. I just throw em in the oven anyway. The kids don't care. They fight over getting the ones with the big hit of sugar in the middle. x
Dear Lori, you are hilarious. The end. Lol.
I always just mix everything together then realize on the directions that I was supposed to slowly blend them.
YAY!!! I'm not the only one who fails at baking!! You are a kindred spirit!
