We Dance.

Mushi mushi,

I am the proud mother a toddler with an impeccably short attention span (bless him).

Way back in the BC (Before Children) I had naive visions of what being a Stay At Home Mum to a toddler would be like. In my head, it involved organising daily craft activities, with crayons and glue and sparkly things. I had visions of playdough and cooking. I had visions of lining up MatchBox cars and shooting them across the floor.

None of these things have happened.

My child is a whirlwind, picking up things to drop another, babbling, running, jumping. I have a shelf full of craft supplies, a box of puzzles, tubs of PlayDough, none of which hold his attention. He just cannot sit still for long enough.

And so, we dance.

My Chop and I, we spend our days bopping, grooving, singing, clapping, twisting, boogying, shaking and occasionally doing the Macarena. As you can see in the photos.

I was working as a children’s entertainer while I was pregnant with my little man, and sometimes I wonder if it was the constant in-utero exposure to upbeat, repetitive kid’s music that has given him his love of rhythm, beat and all things Wigglish.

Music plays all day in The Purple House. The Chop’s favorite toys are his guitar and his keyboard. Tucked away in my closet is a mini drum set that the poor kid peers at mournfully every few days. It’s for his third birthday.

Yep, I’m a mean mummy like that. The box is huge, OK? There is nowhere out of a toddler’s line of sight to hide the bleeping thing.

There are very few actual games, per se, in our house at the moment. It’s all singing, all dancing.

It drives me up the wall.

But I’m OK with that.

Dontcha love the nappy hanging out the back? Goodness knows how I’m going to keep this kids pants up once he’s toilet trained!!

I can only hope that the Chop’s musical tastes expand beyond the Wiggles as he gets older.

Or, at the very least, that he’ll inherit his mum’s love of board games. And I’ll finally have someone to play Guess Who with.

Come play at the Childhood 101 We Play link up

My grandsons have discovered the Beatles! How happy is this grandma. Music of all kinds is so important. Thanks for sharing and I love those shorts. :)

Looks like fun! Mine love to sing and dance, too.
They really love the CDs by They Might Br Giants, as well as the Putamayo World music ones for children.
Found your blog thru the We Play link ups. Hope that you will come see my blog, too:)

I had the same dream! Luckily, at almost 4, some are beginning to be realized :)

My advice … get him into a dance or music class! Princess used to love her music/movement classes and has just started ballet/jazz. Taking my lead from the parents of Angelina Ballerina, I am channelling all that love of dance into a class to try and control it. Umm .. yeah, that's working great … now she's started naming her dances and putting on performances *sigh*, but she really does love it!

Oh, and Dan Zanes is a great performer for "family" music. We bought some of his cd's for Princess, and some for us. He has some dvd's available too :)

My Chunky and Chop would get along VERY WELL! My son loves to listen to music and we dance every morning in our kitchen. It makes me smile…

PS. So adorable

my house is usually full of shouting, hitting, crying. (my boys are 4 and 2). I think i might give the wiggles a go. That sounds much more fun!

Is there anything more fun, more free or more entertaining than a dancing toddler? Joy!

My son is the same way. It's hard to get him to sit still for more than 5 – 10 mins. He'd rather be dancing or beating on the piano. My daughter on the other hand would rather read or learn something. Take care.

Hehe. He's a cute dancer especially with the nappy hanging out of his bum.

That are some pretty smart moves. My daughter used to run in circles as a toddler when she "danced".

How cute is he?
And sounds like you are a wonderful mum! The best kind of play is the kind that tires them out at the same time!! ;)

It melts my heart when Lil starts singing and dancing – she did the makka pakka dance the other day (as much as a 21 month old can). I understand though, there are only so many times you can sing 'The Wheels on the Bus' in a day.

My Bug has the same sort of attention span as Chop … and dancing never fails to please! She's a massive Wiggles fan too, but thanks to our little dance parties she's fond of abit of Queen, Justin Timberlake and thanks to my Mum, anything from disco-era ;)

Sounds like a budding musician/performer you've got there!
BTW–I had the hardest time keeping my son's pants up between 16 and 20! (then he moved out on his own and I didn't have to worry about it anymore! )
