Tomorrow – RRSAHM

Tomorrow

by Lori Dwyer on January 14, 2011 · 127 comments

Tomorrow is my husband’s funeral.

Today, tomorrow, what the fuck ever. I haven’t slept yet so it still feels like tomorrow.

This is so sureal. just the stupidest, most fracicial, bizarrest thing.

But I know it’s real. I know, because I asked the nurse in the ICU, while we were waiting. Waiting for fucking everything. People, police, x-rays, organ donor woman, the last few hours. Waiting. And I asked her- “Is this real? I’m not dreaming?”. And she said “No, you’re not”.

Which was good. No I’m sorry. No pity, no softening the blow. Because this is fucked. And it’s fucking horrible and being sorry doesn’t fucking help anything.

Fuck. I fucking bury mu husband tomorrow. In a grotesque, gothic way, today felt like the day before my wedding. And, oddly, ironically, the night beofre has the same sense of quite anti-climax.

Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. I’m wiriting here, as i said, because i have to.I know my grief, my experience, my stigma- it makes some people uncomfortable at the moment. And I don’t give a fuck.

As always, I love you lot. I am strong and I can do this. I can do this. In a twisted, heart breaking way, I’m looking forward to it. The ritual. The saying goodbye. The celebration.

Ok. I’m out. Ihave a post, coming, next week, I’m sure, to tell you all how freaking awesome you are. You know how uch I appreciate it. I just don’t even have the head space to process the amazing, incredible things you lot- this communtiy, the Intenet communtiy, my communtiy, have done for me. I can’t even begin to expres… you’ve taken me and held me and softened my blow and I love you all so much. I want to write it properly, when I can do it justice.

Exhausted. Out. xoxo

There is nothing you can say that will ever make me feel uncomfortable. Kick, scream, swear….do whatever you need to do to make it through this. And don't stop doing it until you feel ready, even if that takes months. We will be here.

Had wandered over from Brenda's blog just before this terrible nightmare happened to your family. I'm so sorry. I can't imagine how it feels. Stay strong, but also allow yourself to be weak – do whatever you need to…. run screaming around your neighbourhood with your knickers on your head if it helps…and keep writing – you have a great gift there lady!
Sending you love and best wishes from the UK.

But still, I am so sorry this is happening to you.
You sweet, lovely, Lori.

Lori, my heart was with you today.
I was thinking yesterday (while you wrote this post) of your wedding too, and of how it must have felt then on the eve of it, and yesterday on the eve of the funeral.
No words can describe your pain, and I'm so sorry you had to have today.

Life can be totally unfair, and you have been dealt the heaviest of blows. If it helps, there is an enormous group of strangers here that feel for you. No doubt you have close friends and family who will help today, and give the suport you need, for you, and the children.
Nothing can fix it, all one can do is adjust over time. May it all be as smooth as possible.
Oh, and you say what and how you like; anything is acceptable.

I couldn't blog about my husband's funeral for months afterwards … but did blog in the end, because I did not want to forget One Single Thing that was part of his life.
The one thing I couldn't do at the funeral but now so much wish that I did, was to just Look Up and let the sheer number of people at the service sink in – That Many People are here for us. I so wish I had turned around and looked up at the faces of the people who love us instead of avoiding all eye contact and staring down at the ground.

It will be a hard day. Really hard.
Know that me and my kids will be thinking of you and your kids and wishing you every strength.

I don't know you, and I've only just come across you here, and still I cry for your heartache. I hope you know that even us strangers out here really care, and will be sending you strength to get through this. I am so so very sorry for your loss, and I wish there were something I could do besides type those same old words you've read a hundred times.

I'm sending my love to you today, to your children and your family. Don't worry about anyone else's opinion about your writing.

It's your blog sweetheart, you do what you like:) If you want to write, write, and if you don't, then don't feel obligated to either. Just do what you need to do, when you need to do it.

Lori, fucked is about right, but still doesn't even come close to covering it. So swear, laugh, cry until there's a puddle on the keyboard, rage, celebrate what you had and mourn what you've lost. Say whatever it is that YOU need to say. If your grieving and taking whatever catharsis you can makes some uncomfortable, fuck them, because their discomfort is nothing compared to the magnitude of what you feel. Holding your hand today xx

Lori please know that we are thinking of you today. This day will be bloody horrible and your post reminded me of the way I felt when I had to bury my baby boy 17 years ago. Just that raw emotion and the way you honestly don't give a damn about anything else, the world can go to hell and you really couldn't care less.
Take care of yourself and your little ones. It is a situation that no one can truly know how they will react until they experience it and no one deserves to have to go through it,,,, no one!!
Love and Hugs

Don't apologise for coming here and writing. Do NOT apologise to anyone. You are doing what you need to to get through this fucking awful situation.
If coming here, if writing helps you, then do it! If people are upset or offended it's simple, they don't have to read.
Screw what anyone thinks anyway. Right now what's important is what you think, what you feel and what you need and i know there is a shit tonne of us that are only too happy to be there for you and do our best to help you out. <3 Goodluck today (ha! Goodluck. That sounds completely wrong, but hopefully you will get what i mean), my thoughts are with you. Draw strength from me if you need to.

Lori, I have been where you are, I have sat, in my 20's at my husband's funeral holding my baby, thinking this isn't real. This is the most horrendous, most difficult thing you will go through, but in time it get's better, every day slowly but surely life goes back to "new" normal, your new normal life as a widow and you will be ok! You will see Tony in your children as they grow up and it will make you smile, a little frown, a mannerism in your children and there will be a time that it will make you smile, remembering him, rather than cry. Although that will always break you heart that he isn't there to see them himself.

Hugs for tomorrow, it will be a difficult day, but with the support of family and friends you will make it through xx

We will all be there with you, in thought, for you and your little ones, for Tony, and for everything that is fucking unfair and fucked up in this world.

Ahhh, Lori. Keep on talking. I know the heat of a stigma and that discomfort of which you speak. It'll sometimes take a lot of strength to keep going and keep expressing what you need to, but at the end of the day, it's actually easier than the alternative xxxx

I know you're going to anyway, because you're unstoppable and gorgeous, but Lori you know you don't *have* to write that post to your community. We've rallied because you're loved. Your husband is loved. So if you get to next week and that post is still not formed in your head, don't pressure yourself just because you stated out loud that you'd be doing one. (I'm just sayin')

A massive hug imagined being given to you, wish I could give it in person for today.

The Little Things – RRSAHM

The Little Things

by Lori Dwyer on December 20, 2011 · 21 comments

“You can’t argue with the little things. It’s the little things that make up life.”
Hank Scorpio, The Simpsons

It’s the tiniest, littlest things that floor me.

I’ll be just fine, feeling as close to normal as I get (which is better and better, all the time, most of the time… some days at least), and then I’ll come across something that jumps at me, stops me… freezes me in time for a moment, memories rushing back over me.

I remember being dunked under huge waves at the beach as a child. I’d be standing, feet feeling the sand shifting between like the bunching muscles of a snake, with a wave rushing toward me, wave that looks innocent enough, one that I can surely jump.

And suddenly, faster than I imagined, a cold hard wall of salty blue and green hits you, immerses you, tumbling you over and over. The shock is so great you almost forgot to be afraid of the potential pain, and there’s not a lot you can do for it anyway… you just have to roll with the wave, let it wash you over and over until the suds recede and the water begins to rush back again.

Being shocked, knocked for six by tiny things, when I thought two moves, twice sorting and sifting my possessions… one would think that would be enough to purge all the surprises. It’s not. Things still jump out from dark places every now and then, things with teeth. Things that bite and kiss me softly, both at once.

Like a box of matches. A simple, stupid box of matches… pinched from the flash hotel where my husband and I spent our first and only wedding anniversary.

Or spotting something I’ve somehow missed seeing for years now, even before Tony passed away. His name hastily scratched into a old boombox stereo that he was given for his thirteenth birthday. He kept it for over 20 years, and it no longer works… but I can’t bring myself to get rid of it.

And then there’s the proof of life, proof of ordinary suburban life. A list for Chinese takeaway, scrawled quickly on the back of one of my notebooks. I remember being cranky when Tony did that, years ago, defiling my notebook with something so unimportant. Do I have to tell you that now I’m glad he did it? That sometimes I wonder, in the science fiction part of my mind, if it’s possible to lift someone’s DNA from their handwriting, and clone them…?

The little things, indeed. Responsible for taking my breath away, knocking the life right out of me, on a semi regular basis.

***

So far December has been quick and painless, the weather cool and strange… it doesn’t feel like last year, not too much, and I am able to lose myself in the pleasure of my children and my house.

But sometimes it is far too easy to picture my husband there, to imagine exactly what he would be doing if he were here. And that’s when the grief and regret and almost desperate sense of hopeless wishing kick in. It’s only momentary, that feeling. I think I’ve written about it before- the sense that if you try, if you ask, if you believe, time will reverse itself and you can start over. It’s the same childlike logic that shouts in your mind that “He can’t die because I love him, how can he die if I love him?”

A big family Christmas party, and I can see the ghost of him everywhere. My family, not his, so I doubt anyone feels his ghost but me. I can see him, smell him, hear him, picture him there… cooking the barbeque, drinking beer, playing with our kids as the sun goes down and people begin to go home.

It’s a cloud that hangs with me all day, a grey shadow of fettered pain. As darkness comes, the remaining members of my extended family stand around and watch a slideshow of photos on a digital photo frame. One flashes up of Tony and I, one a day just like this one, almost two years ago… we are smiling and happy.

Hot tears wash up through my eyes and I stand at the back on the darkened room and sob silently, lest my son hear me.

How has it been almost twelve months, since I last touched his skin? How is that even possible?

Ironically they say time will make it easier but harder in the same breath, some memories will fade, but my dear hold on to the tangible insignificant things to others, the matches etc, put them in a special place and look through them every now and then. Each first is hard, particularly the first anniversary, just be strong, do what you want to not what others think is best for you, cry for your loss but promise to remember at least one happy memory. Hope this has helped xxxo

Those little things freak me out but make me realise how precious it is to keep mementos and odd things like a handwritten list.

I don't really know what to say. I'm hear. I read the words you write. Happy words and sad words. I've been having a terrible time this holiday. Not because my husband has passed – but because this crippling FEAR exists that I won't get to touch my son next Christmas. When I ordered our Christmas album… I put extra pictures of him in there – and the thought crossed my mind – I need to because what if he is not here next year? Who the hell thinks like that? But it is true. He's sometimes so ill. *sigh* and I'm really sorry I just dumped on your post. I didn't mean it.

You can hate me. I think I read so you can keep me going. Knowing that you are surviving what I fear. But – I still love coming here. Where tears and fears are aired like laundry. xoxo

This will be my second Christmas without Dad and it is infinitely easier this time around. I've found that the weeks leading up to the anniversary of his passing are craptastic and as you say, it's all the little things that trigger you off. But on the day? For me, it was ok. I so hope and pray it is for you too. Makes me sad and mad at the same time that you have to go through this but look at what it's made you. Stronger than you ever thought possible, right? Did you ever think that you'd make it this far? And yet you have. The little things will continue to pop up but with time (yes, boring but true) they will no longer resemble tidal waves.

The News. – RRSAHM

The News.

by Lori Dwyer on February 12, 2014 · 10 comments

I don’t watch the news anymore.

I quit years ago. I don’t read newspapers. I don’t watch the five o’clock news bulletins. I scroll past anything on Twitter or Reddit or FaceBook that might force me to face up to the real world outside of my own little bubble.

And I think I like it this way.

I’ve heard before that it’s recommended that people suffering from depression don’t watch the news. And I can’t imagine it being a productive activity in terms of anxiety.

There is so much to worry about in life. It all seems significantly worse when it’s presented in full colour, high definition, complete with the concerned tones of news anchors or the irritating comments section of news websites.

It feels selfish sometimes- as though I don’t care about the world. As though I have some kind of moral obligation to know what’s happening around me, all the time. As though being aware of the injustices of the world would be enough to fix them.

In reality, even if I was faced with the biggest of injustices and the most obvious of degradation… I probably wouldn’t have the energy to change anything. Activism is outside the realms of my own possibilities right now.

People existed for thousands of years without knowing what was happening globally. Without TV, without the Internet. And everything was fine.

They say things are the best they’ve ever been. We have technology and insight. We’re globally connected in a way the worlds never been before. Wars and murders are at an all-time low. It’s just that every day we’re presented with a blackboard of disheartening images and overwhelming information… stuff we don’t really need to know.

If ignorance is bliss… then not watching the news is a simple matter of happiness.

I also don’t watch the news. I do however check out the front pages of Reddit and I seem to know what is going on in the world and I only delve into what I think is important to me. The constant reporting of mostly negative things affects you, regardless if you suffer from depression or not.

I don’t watch the news either! I will read it occasionally but in very small doses. I don’t need to watch the news because someone is always willing to tell you bad news. I then decide what level I want to be exposed to it. Sometimes that means I read an article, sometimes I don’t. Life is hard enough without seeking out the bad stuff.

I don’t watch the television news – I feel like TV thinks I’m stupid and I can’t watch without getting angry. Anyway, I don’t get very good reception where I live, so it’s not something I have to worry too much about.

I wont read most ‘newspapers’ for the same reason.

I consume a really large amount of news online. All day, in fact. Too much. It gets exhausting, overwhelming. There’s a special kind of cognitive dissonance and doublethink you need to have to be able to see the fucking awful things going on in the world, from the everyday awfulness to large-scale catastrophe, and still be able to go about your business and your life like any of it is actually important.

I was about to say it’s different because I’m not depressed, but after writing out my last paragraph, you know what? Maybe I am.

I think what I get most from this huge over-consumption is just plain angry. Furious. And when there’s nothing I can do with that fury it kind of collapses in on itself with exhaustion and leaves a big void. I guess that’s a little easier than being angry all the time, right?

I’m not sure how to respond when people say they don’t watch or read the news – when they tell me they’re unaware of a massive event or cause or tragedy, sometimes I think they lack in empathy because they don’t want to know what’s going on in the world. I definitely think consuming news can shift the introspection and help see others’ situations.
Consuming news in this modern day can be more selective than 10 years ago – we can choose how much and what we consume through the Internet.

Safe. – RRSAHM

Safe.

by Lori Dwyer on March 13, 2012 · 17 comments

I’m so sorry if I scared anyone yesterday… I truly didn’t mean to. I don’t think I thought a lot about that one before I hit publish, hey…? Thank you so much to everyone who was concerned- I didn’t mean to frighten you. And thanks to the handful of people who ‘got’ that post too- I know I’m not the only one who feels that way, some days.

Please be assured that I am safe. Always, always, keeping myself and my kids safe is my first priority. And I promise they are sheltered from the worst of this, as best as I can manage.

I’ve talked over this one with my shrink… it’s OK. I’m OK. I’m safe. I promise. I see my shrink. I take my meds. I get myself and my kids where we need to be, every time, emotionally, eventually, and I keep us all safe.

That’s the best I can do, for now.

***

The combination of wanting to self destruct and the loneliness that washes through like a wave on the 6th of every month brings a crippling anxiety attack and my house feels like its eating me.

The silence reverberates around me, and the walls seem to suck in and a voice in my head begins to pound that this is not my life, this is not how it should be, I didn’t sign up for this. My husbands face is everywhere, his voice echoes in my head. Leave me alone, leave me alone, leave me alone. I am afraid of myself. (Safe, not safe, safe, not safe, safe, not safe….)

Safe becomes the keyword. I need to get my children somewhere safe, and then me somewhere safe. I am ashamed of myself and I feel stupid, why can’t I deal with this by now? Why can’t I just pull my socks up and get on with it?

I just… can’t. I can’t. I do it all the time, I just get on with it, do what needs to be done, raise my kids and smile and pretend I’m fine. Tonight I am too fucking tired and fragile and just plain sad, and I can’t do it. I can’t pretend.

I make frantic, tear filled phone calls to the few people who will, occasionally, mind my kids. Working, too busy, doing their own thing and can’t help me. And again it falls on my mum and my heart thumps with guilt as her phone rings.

She is so tired, so worn out, but she never says no, never refuses to help me. All I can feel is shame and guilt and I tell her I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry, over and over again. Her patience is worn thin and she’s fed up I am so lucky I have her.

And I run. I play music loud in my car and drive that bit too fast because if I hit a tree it doesn’t matter, my kids aren’t in the back right now and I’ll get to see him again.

I escape to Bunny‘s and crash on his lounge. I watch bad TV, eat pizza, smoke too many cigarettes. I cry and I take Valium and I relax because I the pressure is off, I’m Lori again and not mum and I won’t hurt myself here because someone will stop me, surely. I feel ugly and fifteen years old and I wonder how the fuck my life got to be like this.

But I’m safe, for tonight. Safe, and so are my kids.

That’s the best I can do for now.

Sorry to be blunt but please get some more help than simply writing it out to an audience on the Internet. You've writte souch about the importance of speaking out and treating mental illness, and skis quitting smoking – I urge you to follow your own advice. See your GP and psychologist. Talk it out.
I'd hate for what you write on your blog to be detrimental you caring for your kids, or for it to ruin the relationship you have with your kids when they are older. You write of smoking, drugs, suicidal thoughts and self harm. Remember that brilliant important post you wrote about people not being better off without you when you've gone, well maybe this also applies to your current situation – being absent through escapism. Your kids need their mum, and they need you as a well woman.
You're a strong woman – please use that strength to seek some proper, long term help. I can't imagine how hard things are for you right now, but I can imagine the devastation for you and your children if you don't get help.
Sorry if I've overstepped the mark here. I'm really worried for you, as all your readers are. I've come back to your blog over these few days and I've really wanted to say something. Glad you're safe for now, but you need to Be safer long term.

Don't worry, I KNOW you wouldn't hurt your kids, but I do pray for you. I know because maybe I've never been there, not exactly, but I've been close. Driving through the empty night with no lights on just trusting that the road is there. I've been there.

to a certain extent it's good for your kids to see you break down, AND GET BACK UP. The need to understand that it's ok to…feel? My own mom had a hard time of it, but we saw her go out to her shrink, and group therapy. We saw her go to bed during the day some days, but we always saw her get up, and make us food and take care of us. At one point my sister didn't want her to go to therapy, and mom mom explained that she had to go so she could be a better mom, and my sister replied…"oh, so you will be a better mom, and the *I* will be a better mom and the world will be a better place"
It's interesting, I didn't see your last post as weakness. you are able to articulate what you are feeling and although it can be a scary place to be, facing it is always better than hiding. kudos. you are being a good mom and in the end, helping making the world a better world.

Your last post worried me too, but I couldn't think of anything adequate to say. It seems huber iliac, even attention-seeking, to say that I empathise, because I haven't lost a husband and don't have two young children to take care of. But I do know many of the despairs you discussed yesterday, in my case derived from mental illness (in yours, I'm guessing, through grief and trauma).

So, all I can say is that it's shit; I (sort of) know that headspace, and I'm truly saddened that that's where you are. But above all, you're safe, and that's the important thing. Good on you for still seeing the shrink etc – it's these darkest of times, when that contact is most needed, that it's also the most difficult to face. Keep fighting. You are a tremendously talented and remarkable woman, and you deserve to get through this to a much more positive other side.

Please take care, and as people stated yesterday, the blogosphere is here for you. xxx

Well, damn woman… just damn. Now that we've jumped this hurdle, would you mind so very much NOT doing this again. I have a tendancy to get thrown off horses & it BLOODY WELL HURTS!!!! I had a chat with Death after my Daddy died, almost 3 months ago now, & asked him to give my family a break from his visits. As I consider you part of MY little family, I would hope that you would reconsider not teasing Death for a.very.long.time!! Put away that welcome mat & I will tell him that he's not to visit you again for a.very.long.time!!! (Mum's can be amazing – when I had to go for my termination, my mum hung up the phone on me… spec. eh!!)
Oh & when you drive to Bunny's house, drive with care. Love you honey – I'm here in one form or another XX

What She Will Become. – RRSAHM

What She Will Become.

by Lori Dwyer on July 1, 2013 · 6 comments

My daughter’s imagination runs wild throughout the house, pirouetting and bubbling along within her.

Every object has a personality, a voice, a gender, and a story line. Teacups chatter to tomato sauce bottles. Bottles of shampoo and conditioner have in-depth conversations with Barbie dolls as they cruise the lounge room in a lurid pink toy convertible.

Shoes become boats and jet skis. Open cupboards are transformed into the palaces of princesses and kings.

My mother tells me I used to do the same.

While my son is a contrasting trajectory of almost-hysteric activity followed by periods of gadget-enabled apathy; my daughter is constant low-burning energy. Her tiny mind sees a million stories where others see commonplace tableaux.  I have never known her to be bored- her capacity to entertain herself is endless.

I envy her… I remember, right into my teenage years, being entertained more by my own mind than by outside influences. Once I was too old to play with toys, once I no longer needed a physical representation of the characters in my mind, the stories remained; twirling themselves like vines on old trees. Stories paused and stalled when Real Life was so rude as to interrupt my internal narrative, but continued unabated once I was free to daydream again, my mind picking up the thread of them exactly where it was severed last.

I think it’s an unfortunate consequence of growing up, of becoming adult. Fantastical stories are diluted into daydreams. Daydreams, eventually, are replaced with bittersweet memories and interminable worry over the future.

Which leaves another line to add to the prayer for my daughter. May her imagination stay and swell, overwhelm her. Spill itself onto canvas or paper or musical instrument, or whatever else may capture her attention. May that creativity be so colourful, so vivid, that it has no choice but to slosh itself over into the universe that surrounds it.

There was a little girl, who had a little curl….

***

She continually surprises me.

I know my son in a way I don’t my little girl. He is like me- we are wired the same.

My daughter is an enigma. An ethereal fairy. A cranky ballerina. She knows herself, and makes steadfast declarations according to that knowledge, swayed not by peer pressure or popular opinion.

“It’s a beautiful day”, I offer. We are running errands, my children comfortably strapped in and surveying the outside world as it flashes by. “I like sunny days. They make me happy.”

“Me, too” says my son, examining this concept in the unaffected way five year old’s do. “The rain makes me sad.”

“Me, too” I concur.

“Not me,” says the Bumpy girl. “I like the rain. It’s wet and it makes me happy. It’s good for dancing.”

Cloudy days do indeed make her happy, and she does dance in the rain.

She refuses ice-cream after dinner. She cannot watch documentaries where one animal eats another as it breaks her heart and brings tears to her eyes. She grows up while I’m not looking, morphs into a more amazing creature every day.

She’s awe-inspiring, incredible. I cannot wait to see what she’ll become.

And just quietly, I think our daughters are kindered spirits. I actually worry about her sometimes, now she’s in big school she doesnt seem to have a lot of friends -the other kids dont seem to ‘get’ her. Not that she’s bothered by that though.
Well done tho, your post gave me & him big smiles xo

Its absolutely amazing isn’t it! My 2 year old Paige is much like your beautiful daughter! And Ava my 5 year old, is much like her daddy. Which is probably why they are seriously two peas in a pod. They call each other their “best friend” lol… but Paige, she’s just magic! And stubborn! Will argue black and blue lol… It can be pouring with rain and she’ll argue to the death that it’s sunny lol … But the imagination is amazing and I to, can’t wait to see what she’ll do with her life. Its kind of bittersweet though isn’t it? Cause on the one hand its awesome to see them growing up, getting a voice and a mind of their own. But then on the other hand they’re not that precious little helpless baby they once were.

Sleeping Like The Dead. – RRSAHM

Sleeping Like The Dead.

by Lori Dwyer on May 17, 2011 · 30 comments

Something incredible has happened.

It’s been just over a week since I took a sleeping tablet.

Sleep… it’s amazing. I didn’t realise how much I missed it.

Ever since the beginning of the After, sleep has been such a bitch. I didn’t sleep so much as die for a few hours, knocked out cold by muscle paralyzing sleeping pills that made me drool and sweat and saw me virtually unable to move from the position I fell asleep in.

But what a blessing those little orange pills (rope..) were. I didn’t care that I woke not feeling like I slept, or dreamt, or gone anywhere but the blackest, deepest part of my mind, where I replayed the last few minutes of my husband’s life over and over, where I got lost in the delusional hate in his eyes.

But that was better than before the pills, the first week or so.. when I couldn’t sleep without waking up sobbing from nightmares. When getting to sleep quite literally took hours, because every time I closed my eyes I’d see that blue shirt, that orange rope, the feel of the dead weight of his body swinging slightly, rope creaking, as I shook him (that feeling, his shirt beneath my hand… I’ll never forget it, as long as I live, it’s branded onto my brain, stuck there with the tar of trauma)…. the obsoletion that came with the pills, it was better than all that.

Anything would have been better than that.

But the last week or so…. I have slept. The only dreams I’ve had involve children’s TV, which, while not exactly awesome, is far preferable to nightmares.

I sleep, for hours. Ten hours here, another three hours there. I sleep peacefully, and I fall asleep the way I used to, in the Before- counting my blessings.

There may not be a whole lot of them, right now. But there’s enough to count.

You know that image that is burned into your brain every time you shut your eyes? Well it does eventually go away. I reckon it takes about a year. Now it is not the last thing I see before I go to sleep. Although I can still conjure it up at will … (like now).

As for your blessings, I've noticed that once you actively start to count them, like really sit down and make a list (I've had to do this I don't know how many times in order to give myself a boost), you can usually come up with more than you realize.

HUG!!!! Love to you and the kiddoes as always.

I am glad you are sleeping so well again. Sleep deprivation only aids the crazy we all have inside.

The Things We Do For Our Kids… – RRSAHM

The Things We Do For Our Kids…

by Lori Dwyer on September 14, 2011 · 48 comments

Heya, I’ve blogged many times before about the way children’s TV has the inherent ability to drive parents absolutely insane.

Especially the Wiggles, bless their colored skivvies. I dream in Wiggle some nights.

But… the things we do for our kids. When I got a press release not long back stating that the first ever Little Charlie Bear DVD was being released in Australia on September 14th, I well and truly took the bait.

The Chop, at three and a half, adores this show. He sings the theme song. He sits, transfixed, watching Charley Bear (“No mum!! It’s Little Charley Bear!!” OK, kid….) tap dance and talk to the moon. And I can totally live this. There’s no annoying techno dance music, no hardcore issues. This is pleasant kids TV, pure and simple. And the narrator, James Cordon, just has a voice to die for- calming but expressive.

It’s not quite as addictive or cute as Small Potatoes- featured here at Glow’s place– but Charley Bear is a winner. I asked the Chop how many jellybeans he would give it on the RRSAHM-Ranking-Stuff Scale and he said…

“Mummy, I want to eat the jellybeans.”

Which is a fair call. So I’m giving Little Charley Bear at 4 out of 5 jellybeans on the RRSAHM-Ranking-Stuff-Scale.

And because I like to give stuff away…. I’ve got three packs featuring the new Charley Bear DVD and a gorgeous plush Charley Bear Fun Sounds toy. To win…

Leave a comment letting me know which kid’s TV show tortures you the most.

Make sure you leave a valid email address with your comment.

Aussie residents only, sorry OSer’s…

Winners will be drawn at Random at 8pm on the 16th September, contacted by email and announced via RRSAHM’s Twitter and FaceBook account.

Winners have 48 hours to respond to their winning email, or the prize will be redrawn.

Awesome saucesome. Your time starts… now.

Wow, a lot of you seem to have anger issues to get so worked up over television shows and to swear about it as well. As for in the Night Garden, if you've ever read about the creators and how the show came about, it really doesn't require anyone to be on something to understand it. All the faces have big eyes and smiles which children love. The story ends with all the characters going to bed because so many children hate going to bed, so if they see the different characters doing it, they will realise it's a normal part of their day. Seriously, some of you need to chill out, or just turn the tv off.

The Pinky Ponk is a flying pub for starters – the Tombliboos get in there and drink too much Pinky Ponk juice then get a sore head and have to go home and sleep it off – what the?? As for Iggle Piggle and his inappropriate pelvic movements while kissing Upsy Daisy, there's some serious sub-text there.

Oh yes, Grandpa in my Pocket is really very annoyingly stupid. My daughter likes Gaspard and Lisa, which I like the visual style of but I don't understand why are there are these two families of dogs when everyone else is human? Humans with pet dogs, as well, and the pet dogs look totally different?

I've never let my kids watch The Wiggles or High-5 because I am a horrible selfish mother. I've encourage Charlie and Lola, Olivia and The Octonauts, which they all like. My littlest is obsessed with The Little Einsteins.

The most annoying one for me is hard to pin down. In case you couldn't tell, LOL. Possibly Dora with the stupid map that repeats things fifty million times. But I haven't let my kids watch it in years, so maybe it doesn't do that anymore ;)

(Why do I always have such trouble leaving comments!? Gah, Blogger!)

I agree with all of the above – the creators of In the Night Garden AND Yo Gabba Gabba were on some special kind of crack when they came up with that shit. Seriously. What the?!

The show that springs to mind for me, though, is Fireman Sam. For starters, stop trying to copy Postman Pat! The animation seems somehow amateurish to me, and the kids voices are like nails on a bloody chalkboard. Ugh.

Uh oh! One of my fav topics to rave about…
I generally don't like children's shows that don't hold my kids attention.
I reserve a special place of dislike for Angelina Ballerina, Pororo, Bottle Top Bill (AAAAAND his best friend Corky), Dibo, and Nanigugu.
I don't understand why Grandpa In My Pocket wasn't called something like Grandpa's Magic Cap.
I think 'Yo Gabba Gabba' is fun. My boys don't like 'Lazy Town', but I think Robbie Rotten is hilarious.
I didn't used to like In The Night Garden, but hey, it provides us with 1/2hr of quiet time at the end of the day.

The End.

Dora grinds my nerves, Yo Gabba Gabba makes my skin crawl and In The Night Garden makes me want to scream. But my all time most despised has got to be Caillou (?spelling) oh my god the whine on that kid and for ages my 3.5 year old would follow suit. It's banned here lol

But Little Charley Bear is divine and both my kiddos LOVE him x

The worst show, that regardless of how many times I watch it, I still cannot stand, is Hilltop Hospital.
It is sexist, inappropriate garbage! GAH!

Maybe That's Just Me…? – RRSAHM

Maybe That’s Just Me…?

by Lori Dwyer on February 12, 2013 · 10 comments

Being in love is all kinds of awesome and I traipse around, laughing and smiling and being silly. I put on five badly–needed kilos. I still sleep alone most of the time, of course, but I wake most mornings feeling refreshed and calm– as if I actually have slept, not just eventually fallen into a warm black unconsciousness due to the physiological necessity of needing to rest.

Life just seems… easier. Momentous tasks revert to simple inconveniences. Things seems accomplish-able, dreams believable. Life suddenly comes into some kind of focus, a fine point in the distance– something to work toward again, rather than just surviving every day. Relishing in myself, as opposed to clawing to maintain my sanity when it feels as though very few people In Real Life actually give a f*ck about me, and, sadder, don’t particularly care about my children either.

I’d forgotten what ’happy’ felt like, the effect it can have. And I mean literally forgotten, without any of my usual melodrama– it takes me by surprise how good this feels, how happiness is impossible to contain to one small area of your life, how it seeps out and colors everything beautiful. I find myself feeling simply… lighter. Smiling more. More playful with my children, less inclined to yell and grumble at them. I find new music everywhere I go and it sticks in my mind, phrases sweet and melodic that contentment causes to come tumbling from my lips.

I walk around singing love songs, and I’m happy if that’s a slightly pathetic cliche… give me blatant, happy normality and I’ll not just take it. I’ll grasp at it desperately with both hands.

And it feels normal. I feel normal. Wonderfully, boringly normal. I walk around feeling as though I’ve reconnected again, this time with an apolycyptic zing. After living in a barren, painful No Man’s Land for two years now; I feel as though I’m suddenly back, with a vengeance, in the land of the living. And it’s intense here– colors and smells and noise and people with their banalities and ideosynchracies. I find myself shying away, not drinking of it too heavily or partaking too fully, lest I gorge myself on the sickly sweetness of it. (I remember, leaving the dull, quiet safety of the maternity ward for the first time after my son’s dark birth and witnessing my surburban world with the same intensity I’m feeling now– colors were suddenly so bright, people so fast and loud. And I recall, years before children when I was a different person, interviewing inmates from the Big Brother house once they were released, and them commenting that they felt they same. It makes me wonder– how loud and fast are we, compared to the pace we are meant to run at…?)

And I thoroughly enjoy it, right down to it’s most basic roots– “See? Do you all see this?!? I have someone who loves me, and I love them. They think I’m awesome. This means I’m not broken anymore. This is a big fat blurred inky stamp that says that I. Am. Normal.”

(And all the hipsters in the back row with their feet up on the seats can intone here all you like about how ‘being normal isn’t that great anyway’. I’ll take that, and I’ll say– bullshit. Normal– ‘of the norm’. Unremarkable. The same as everyone else. If you think ‘normal’ is an undesirable state… you haven’t been where I’ve been.)

And it feels so good…

Until it doesn’t anymore. Until something happens to make me feel stupid, foolish-of course I am not normal. Of course I cannot just flip a switch and make all this go away… and neither can The Most Amazing Man In The Universe, as amazing as he is.

Because despite that happiness- maybe because of it- receding back into the horror of what happened, the awfulness of it that still snags the edges of my mind… delving into the thoughts that make the whole world feel ugly, so that numbness and disconnection becomes my only way to cope… Well. That’s the polar opposite to this ‘happy’ thing I have going on.

It’s existing in that split state again.

The light. The dark.

So I walk around thinking I’m normal… until something reminds me I’m not. Like dissolving into a quaking, shaking mess within an hour of returning from my calm Melbourne bubble because my children will not stop screaming at me. For forty five minutes they take turns yelling at each me, at each other, at nothing at all; until I am on the verge of tears and my whole body is tense, hands shaking, breathe coming in great gasps. “It’s just because they’ve missed you so much”, says my mother, and I think Yes, and now they are going out of their way to punish me, now they are intent on making me pay for the time off I’ve so selfishly taken.

Is that normal? To feel so persecuted, so bereft and agitated? If that’s what’s those burnt out, over–ridden symptoms the PTSD lays cause to– if the legacy of this is that my mind freezes in flight or fight adrenaline every time someone, anyone starts yelling– then shouldn’t it come with a shut off switch, some kind of physiological morphine that dulls the effect of being yelled at when it’s your own children doing it?

Or does it not matter, not really? PTSD is PTSD. And screaming is screaming. Whether it be my children, or any random someone… it still feels like a verbal wall battering against me, an aggressive pulse that squeezes my mind, my nerves. Every single fiber of me goes stiff, closes up, blocks out the resonant phrases until its noise, just noise, and a voice I know well from a few years ago now tells me that it will be over soon. It will be over soon.

Just keep up your own guard of white noise and soon the yelling will stop.

But, again, as if just going around and round in a maze of my own mind, I hit the same point– I should feel differently about it, since its my own kid doing the yelling… shouldn’t I? There should be some kind of Get Out Of Jail Free card, some biological smoke and mirrors to ensure that this doesn’t phase me…. right?

I don’t know… do real normal people have that? I’ve lost my judging point, my yard stick for where acceptable ends and Slightly Crazy begins. Maybe normal people do possess that ability to be mostly un-phased by the constant yelling of their offspring, and I lost when the world became unsafe. When all my parameters of what people are capable of, what they might do in a fit of irrational rage, were suspended and held hostage by the world and the whims of one person.

Maybe it’s a maternal instinct I never had to begin with.

Or maybe all that’s bullshit, and all mothers feel like this a lot of the time. Like they can’t take it, like they want to run away. Like if two small people scream at them again, cracking the silence and making every nerve jump and singe and cry or in shock; then they may just absolutely lose their sh*t.

Or, again… maybe that’s just me.

Yeah, screaming sucks. That’s why it was so hard to deal with my daughter’s head lice – it actually contributed to hubby’s and my anxiety/depression.

And I can’t cope with noise when my nerves are frazzled. For some reason, they were frazzled on Saturday afternoon and everyone got on my nerves. When we came home from the movies, hubby, daughter and her BFF were all being very noisy outside, wouldn’t calm down, and then I lost it. :(

I know the solutions:
1) Children that won’t stop fighting / screaming can be sent to their rooms for a time out until they calm down. Repeat as necessary. Length of time is 1 minute per year of age.
2) Mum has a timeout too. Just deep breathing while they are in their rooms. We can also explain that the noise is making us very grumpy and if they’d like us to be happy, they need to stop.
3) Mum needs to escape for a while – yes I know you just did that, but make sure you have your next escape planned when you finish the first one. I have a semi-planned escape for Saturday :)

I never tire of reading you Lori. It’s not ‘about’ you, it *is* you. I seem to recall a looong (not so long) time ago where i read your blog for the first time and realised that what I was going through had happened to other real people. The utter utter desperate grief, the dying, the empty, and it made me feel at least not quite alone. Now, reading these pages where you are alive again (I like to think of it that way for me), I can see in you how I began to feel not too long ago. Our circumstances were worlds apart, but our feelings have followed a similar path. Yep, it does feel f$%king great! …and yes, I too slip on occasion, sliding back a little into that pit. But honest love pulls me back up. I am still in awe Lori. ‘Love ya guts’ as a friend of mine says. Oh, and NYAAH NYAAH! I put on 10 kilos! But I really need to lose a couple and get a bit fitter, because sitting in that pit has made me a little lazy/sedentary. Isn’t it great to be alive? Big hugs and love Lori. I am truly, truly happy for you and your beautiful soul :)

Love is a great and powerful force. Falling into that intoxicating new love stage would be hard when you have children because it is only natural to crave that person and want to pull them into your bubble and hold tight until you absolutely must come up for air.
I do NOT think your children are punishing you. I DO think it is important that you take time out for yourself, and that it isn’t selfish to do that. There is a balance though isn’t there? And it’s different for all of us, and so we have to push and pull and find that balance. Your children love you, admire you, and they want you to be happy, but they want to be part of that happiness too.
I have to play music really loud when I’m struggling. Sometimes I just go and sit on the toilet so I can say I am going to the toilet and I really just close my eyes and be. And this is me, with another person here to help. I don’t know how I would do it day in and day out alone. Give yourself a little credit.

I said to my BFF’s boyfriend a couple of weeks ago “Don’t you just wonder what being normal feels like? How quiet inside your head it must be? How nice it would be to enjoy happiness without the paralysing fear waiting for the other penny to drop, because it always does, and it’s always more painful than you anticipate.” He just looked at me like I had lost my marbles. He said calmly “What is normal? What makes you think you aren’t?” But there was a wiseness in his eyes, like he saw for the first time a flicker of there being more to me than this silly funny girl.

Carol February 13, 2013 at 1:56 pm

You could join in with the screaming? Or maybe try whispering, or maybe stand there and look at them, with your nerves on edge, take a deep breath & say, “I can’t HEAR you…”. Just to see what they do. Then quietly walk away, out to the garden for a smoke. Hey why not. I’ll try almost anything once. To be honest, I don’t know which is worse… having them punish you for being away, or have them punish you for trying to leave.

As for The Most Amazing Man In The Universe (MAMITU), damn – about time something brings more light in your life. Everything just has a new shininess to it, it’s a bit like how green green is after it rains, or how blue a summer sky is. So, yep, keep singing & keep smiling & keep on being normal. Coz, what is normal?? xx :D

Shannon February 13, 2013 at 10:44 am

Maybe your reaction might be a teensy bit exaggerated because of the PTSD but it is entirely normal to feel like you’re going to lose your mind if your kids don’t for-the-love-of-god shut up for 2 minutes.

Especially if,as a PP mentioned, you’re going it alone.

It’s hard to stay above that blackness when you feel your being totally sucked dry by your kids but it is what it is-kids are needy and they aren’t going to shut up for awhile just so you can enjoy your afterglow.

Just try to hold onto the knowledge that your kids and your reaction to them is totally common and you’re not alone xo

First day back at work Monday after 12 months maternity leave. Long day, tired as hell. Went into my daughter’s room to say good night, her dad tells her to give me a kiss and a cuddle and her response is “Do I have to?” in a whiny voice. I said “no you don’t” and walked right back out of the room.

She didn’t really mean badly, she was probably being silly, but I’d hit the limit of tolerance and simply walked away. It’s not just you.

I think I react worse when it is my kids doing the unreasonable yelling at me. They’re supposed to be with me, not making my life insufferable.

Woah, Molly! February 13, 2013 at 9:32 am

However you feel, that’s how you feel. I think a lot of us spend a lot of time trying to justify how we feel to ourselves and people around us.

(If it was me in your place, with the screaming, the tears would have come sooner, so much sooner and I may very well have just up and run away…)

I guess all you can do in situations like that is hold on to the feelings all that love and happiness inspires in you, the way that makes you feel and know that when the screaming stops, that will still be there, somewhere inside.

No its not just you that wants to run away from their children sometimes. I want to run away from mine sometimes and I only have the one. I think its harder doing it on your own. No one for back up, no one to give you a five minute break, all your childrens attention is focused on you and solely you because you are their world. Just as they have to put up with our mummy moods we have to put up with their kiddy moods. I’ve has behaviour issues with my son recently. You need to find something that will calm them down when they get in those moods, easier said than done I know but you will get there! xoxo

Madly – RRSAHM

Madly

by Lori Dwyer on April 11, 2012 · 19 comments

“I may dissect each little thing and put myself out there so much but at least that means that I still care… You may not get hurt or make an ass of yourself that way but you don’t fall in love that way either. You have not won. You’re alone. I may do a lot of stupid shit but I’m still a lot closer to love than you are.”
***
“‘Have you ever considered falling in love without the madly part?’
‘Well, where’s the fun in that?!’”
***

There is something wrong with me.

I am incapable of having a normal relationship. I am incapable of casual coffees, once a week dates. I am full on– all or nothing.

I hate to be patronized. I’m thirty. I’ve been though enough by now to know how to play this game. I’ve had more relationships that I can count on my fingers and toes.

I know that men are just stupid, that they don’t hurt me on purpose, it’s just that they don’t see it… what hurts me would not hurt them.

I know, thanks very much, that I need to ‘love myself before someone else loves me’. I spent most of my early twenties solidifying that one.

I know that people are turned off, budding relationships ruined, by neediness and want and vulnerability. (What is that concept that we all seem to invest in? If someone is needy, we push them away. The more they need, the more we tell them to stand on their own two feet. I read this post at Glow’s place a while back and it just about broke me… why do we turn people away when they are begging us to hold them up?)

I know all of that… I always have done. But I’ve never paid any attention. I feel attraction with intensity. When I fight, it’s with fire. When I love… it’s with some irrational part of me.

I think I know why I fall so hard, so fast; why I’ve learnt those lessons a thousand times in the past and still choose to ignore them.

I’m looking for someone who’ll push past that. Who’ll choose to see me at my weakest, and be OK with that. Who’ll see the need and the hurt and think to themselves that, perhaps, they could just love me anyway.

No surprises. Whoever it is, the faceless dates I’m referring to, they need to know what they are getting themselves in to. They need to know, in the first instance, how fragile I am, how easily burnt I can be.

So if they need to run, they can run. If they want to bail, they have time to do so. I dare them… this is the worst of me... can you handle this…?

And most of them take the offer and leave… who wants to be with someone that intense? And really, there’s no one to blame but myself. What I do is irrational, and I’m only hurting myself.

But one day, I’ll find someone who will stay. And they’ll have seen the worst of me already. So it won’t be a shock when they discover what’s underneath… when they discover that black, sucking hole of need that lies within.

Someone with the strength to hold my hands, to stop the gravity of it from pushing me in. And who can keep their own feet stable on the edge of that abyss, too.

I refuse to believe that that someone doesn’t exist. I refuse to believe that there isn’t someone who will want me… messy, painful bits and all.

There has to be. What would be the point of it all, if there isn’t…?

Hi Lori, I e-mailed you after reading only 1 post because it moved me so much. Although I feel like a stalker (I suppose you blog for people to read so it's OK)I can't stop reading your posts. I've been reading about Tony's death and your aftermath, I mentioned I knew him a little and I wanted to fill in the gaps. There's nothing I can say that everyone hasn't said already, except I am awed at you, you are so much more than I expected, I don't have words for my level of respect and affection for you. I've read about some of the nasty things people have said and done (like you needed that after what happened!) and I would never say a word against you or how you coped, I am just amazed at you and don't think under the circumstances I would do as well. I'm glad Tink told me to read this blog & will thank her next time I see her. I'm not a cyberspacey-type person, I don't have a profile so will come up anonymous but I think you know who I am from my earlier e-mail. If you feel like getting out on the day of the Autumn Festival come down and say hi, I'm the one with the knitted toys stall. I would be honoured to meet you. Sorry this is such a long sycophantic rant, I'm not a psycho lesbian stalker, just old enough to be honest about how I feel about someone.

I get that in theory and have also done that and it has never worked. I wonder if we as a society are able to deal with it or is it too confronting, emotionally we (and particularly men) don't deal with raw emotion from someone we don't know well, I'm not saying that is right just that it is what it is. It like when your child has a new friend, you want them to show their nice behaviour so the other kid is comfortable and likes them and you cringe a little when they throw a tanty or refuse to share and then as they become friends you worry less about the "bad" (normal) stuff.

I have also noticed that when I have done this it is sometimes a way of ensuring I won't get hurt, a bit of a defence mechanism or a way of testing the person. I'm not criticising – just thinking out loud. My head is a bit of a crazy overanalysing creature at the moment too.

You said they need to know how fragile you are. Maybe you need to wait until you are a little less breakable to seek a partner? I think of an egg. When raw, it's delicate. When boiled, it is easier to manage. I think you need to boil a little longer before you can share yourself with someone else. You sound a little selfish – the man isn't just supposed to be there for YOU but you are supposed to be there for HIM too. Are you able to do that? And maybe you are, you just never mention wanting someone so you can take care of him. It's all about you. When I was looking for my next mate I was desperate for someone to need me. For someone to cook and clean for. For someone to lean on me when there was a problem. Maybe if you thought of it more as 50/50 then you would get better results.

I generally hate those pithy little frames with words of wisdom we find on the internet but in this case, your post brought one to mind.

"Everyone you meet comes with baggage. Find someone who loves you enough to help you unpack."

You may have baggage but, as previous commenters have said, you live your life all out there, sharing the good and the bad with equal courage. Someday someone will come along who is willing to help you with those bags and who will love you for who you are: open and generous and resilient and fragile and honest.

Meanwhile, we all love you out here in the internets.

I don't see anything wrong with this.
But then I have a pretty fucked up view on love that I have a post about sitting in my drafts. I won't share it for the fear that people will come down on me hard because I don't see the world how others do.

You deserve to be loved. Inside and out. Good and the bad. And why waste time with the facade when you are bold enough to strip bare and show people who you are instantly.
That takes guts. Guts I don't even have after almost 6 years.

A lot of people are afraid of those things. A lot of people can't handle too much reality. But when you meet the one who can, well, wow. That will really be something.

It is the only way – you are you. Leaving the unpalatable bits "out" only lasts but for a moment in time. These others who have seen you and left (& I speak of my life here too :) are simply not good enough for you. Quite simply not good enough….and, through acceptance of all of you, and therefore of him too, surely there will come a healing of sorts that is fact beyond the "falling in love" we all aspire to?

We all have that black sucking hole of need inside us, some people are just better at hiding it than others. There is most definitely someone out there who will love you in your entirety, I wholeheartedly believe that.
Those who say you are too intense, too full on, they don't know what it is to live life to the fullest. What you are living is every colour of the human experience. Many won't want to know it, many won't understand it but there will be the one that accepts it. And in turn, accepts every part of you. The good, the bad and the black.

Dreams and Random Neurons – RRSAHM

Dreams and Random Neurons

by Lori Dwyer on July 3, 2012 · 5 comments

A few days after I post Bad Romance– by no means the best post I’ve ever written, but my personal favorite, and I think it will be for some time to come, it’s so melodramatic and feels like some kind of multi-media collage– I dream about my husband, my Man, for the first time in months.

It’s a slumber wrought on Valium and fever and a dream that feel skewed and surreal– angles are wrong, the perspective of objects of out sync with their environment. I know I’m dreaming, of course, it feels like a bad attempt at acid flashback scenery done by a HSC drama class; but Tony, he seems real– all the more real against a background of such fallible absurdity.

I’m sure, too, that this comment from Molly (hi Molly!) added its own tone to the subconscious discussion I only vaguely remember having, the details of which are smeared and fogged. But we talked, we sat companionably and I layed my head on his chest with his arm around my shoulders.

It was the happiest I’ve felt in… years.

He remembered the best bits of me, he said, the happiest stuff we had. He didn’t remember, he said, not at all, the last few weeks of his life, he didn’t remember that last afternoon at all…

“Do you remember spitting on me?”, I ask, and that, if nothing else, is clear and vivid and I ask out of curiously, not malice; and I know he will reply in the same.

It’s then that my daughter wakes, crying in her sleep next to me, half tangled in the fairy clothes she insists on wearing to bed every night, over the top of her flannelette pajamas.

I untwist her from herself, roll over and slip back into the warmth of cosy, dark slumber; but the dream does not return.

***

I’m not implying I had some kind of psychic interaction… but nor am I saying it was ‘just’ a dream. I believe, passionately, both that my husband has contacted me while he’s been dead; and that most ‘psychic’ experiences are possibly the mind’s coping mechanism, a psychological morphine for an overwhelming manifestation of grief.

Those believes can co–exist. I know this, because I believe both. I also know it doesn’t matter whether it was a spirit or a random firing of neurons… the culminitive effect on my psyche is the same.

I feel as if been loved, held, smiled at and treated softly; for the first time in so many long, long months. It’s balm to my soul, a break that felt like an hour but was probably only a minute or two; an action of my mind in my sleep that made me smile the next day, rather than shake my head at myself, wearily afraid of what’s happening to me, what ugly ways my cortex is reforming as it deals with all that horror.

It feels like succession of a truth I already knew… reassurance of what I already thought. Of course, if he has memory of me, he would remember only the best, only the sparkliest bits of a mostly happy marriage…

When it comes to memory, we all stack the deck… especially, logically, in the Afterlife.

Lori in the first few months after I lost my dear friend to suicide, I had a similar dream.

I remember that it was just the two of us, in a dark dank kind of place.

At first it was a sense of rage from me, and acceptance of that rage from him.

Eventually his unwavering acceptance fizzled out my rage and and sat down hopelessly, he came up, put his arm around me and even from inside the dream, I was shocked at how physically 'there' he was – I felt him hold me and his physical presence was just so real – his 'mass' was that of him alive, not an image, not a partial experience – he really felt and looked 'there'.

I am so torn as to whether it was real or a way the brain copes… both seem plausible. I was surprised by his attitude, and it helped me cope… it was not ever in MY thoughts, that his attitude would be as it was… I thought if he was out there, he would be despairing at the mess he had left behind, and despairing at his lost life.

But he was accepting, peaceful, and kind of, removed from the pain… it just was what it was, to him… he was dead, it was done and kind of besides the point (though he compassionately accepted that it was not besides MY point, however he never waivered in his being totally at peace with reality). And he was just seeming to give me an opportunity of an audience to help me learn and heal.

I can explain it away as my brain being desperate to see him, to not just dream him but to 'feel' his human form again.

But I can not explain away just HOW real it was, and the content which was not (I dont think) what *I* would have thought up.

Strange. Who knows. And when we are grieving – who cares?! It can be an unexpected and lasting gift of extra time, however strange that seems.

(You have no idea how much this is blowing my crazy mind.)

I'm so glad you had that moment. I know that the first dream I had of my daughter, the one where I held her and got to tell her that I loved her, made a huge difference for me.

Let's face it, if a lll we remembered were the shite moments, the planet would be empty. Glad you found some respite for your soul.

Hi Lori!

I got teary reading this. I'm so glad that you had this experience. It sounds (despite the scrambledness that a fever dream can bring) like it was comforting. I realkly hope it brought you a little comfort, even if it was only for a while. Hold onto the way it made you feel, pull it up when you need it.

Wishing you all the best and only happy dreams.

Yes I believe these beliefs can co-exist and by doing so help to make ones life be filled with more comfort and warmth….giving more strength to carry on.xx
