It's all anyone wanted.

The Andy Lee Sympathy Association – RRSAHM

The Andy Lee Sympathy Association

by Lori Dwyer on January 3, 2011 · 30 comments

Aloha,

First off- for my overseas, non-Aussie readers, this post will make absolutely no sense. I’ll do my best to explain things as we go along. Think of the italics as subtitles, yes?

*Ahem*.

All of you who are living in Australia and have some form of connection to the outside world, be that the newspaper or twitter or carrier pigeons or whatever, will probably have heard by now that And Lee (funny dude who hosts drive time radio) and Megan Gale (smokin’ hot Aussie supermodel) have split. Altogether now- *awwwwww*. We loved Megan and Andy. Why? Because.. well… we love Megan. And Andy.

Megan is hot. We all know this. But she’s also nice. And she seems to have a sense of humor. She drinks beer and follows AFL (stupid Aussie version of regular football where all the blokes wear tiny shorts and jump all over the place). She also took her famous self into a sex shop to buy this riding crop, to go with this outfit for the races.

She’s the brunette. Cool, huh?

Andy is funny. (In that stupid kind of way where he and his best mate get paid to run amok, dress in chick’s clothes, and eat strange things). And kind of hot. But no one realised Andy was hot, until he was dating Megan Gale.

Anywhats. Andy and Megan hook up, all is well.

Fast forward a coupla years, Andy and Megan release a rather humorous statement saying they’ve broken up, two months beforehand. And everyone was sad.

Fast forward another three weeks, and Megan has hooked up with young AFL player (see above for AFL definition), who is not funny (that we know of), but probably hotter than Andy. And he is a giant 210 cm’s tall (about 19 feet. Not really. But tall). Which made everyone even sadder-er. Because, as we can see, he is quite the intelligent looking bloke not.

And now we get to the point of the post.

I just feel really sorry for Andy.

It’s not just me, right? Poor bloke. He gets dumped (Allegedly. Rampant speculation) by a supermodel. Who then hooks up with a footy player (read that as ‘jock who probably likes to get his penis out with his mates‘). And, as we all know from high school, the footy player with his penis out is the antithesis and nemesis of the funny nerd (geek, dork, loser). Or something.

Which makes Andy seem… kind of…. hard done by. Like his ego may be a little bit bruised, and he needs a big cuddle.

So, I hereby declare RRSAHM to be the home of the Official Andy Lee Sympathy Association.

Not that we’re trying to demasculate you any further, Andy. We’re not. Really. We just feel sorry for you, is all.

So, officially- Andy, we feel for you mate. (Bro). It can’t be easy. Please consider this post one great big signed sympathy card from the women of Australia- nay, the world. In fact, consider this one massive group hug, where we all pour you cups of tea and say things to irritate you, like “It’s all part of life’s rich tapestry”,and “There’s plenty more fish in the sea”. And yadda yadda yadda. We know you’re putting on a brave face, Andy. We love you for it.

All those in favour of joining the Andy Lee Sympathy Association, please leave a comment saying ‘Ay’.I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.

Ay! Lurve Hamish & Andy. Did alot for geeks everywhere…making hot girls think twice before ditching a guy for being nerdy. But, c'mon Andy, if you didn't want to put a ring on it after 4 years…me thinks his self-esteem was still in the 'she's out of my league & I'm undeserving' stage. Which is sad, because Hamish & Andy do have to grow up one day. And seriously, who's going to want to date Andy now, they'll forever be compared (probably less favorably) than Ms G. And who wouldn't want a rebound fling with a 22 year old Carlton supporter (Andy's fave team by the by!!). I went out and bought a Lexus Hybrid SUV for my midlife crisis. She already owns one…so I guess a supersize me strapping young lad seemed like the next big thing. Go girl!

Everybody is assuming he is sad or suffering. I never bought that he was that into her. For me it was more to impress his mates. He liked to Bragg a lot about being in bed with her. The only thing he said about her in interviews was that she was out of his league. Had the chance to marry her in four years, but weren't even engaged?. Come on that was his choice. I guess he doesn't have to pretend anymore.

Megan is rebounding in all her 35 year old glory trying to get over the fact that the biological clock is ticking and her long-term love did not want to marry her (even though she is one of the hottest women alive). The Brow Wax. – RRSAHM

The Brow Wax.

by Lori Dwyer on April 16, 2012 · 21 comments

I had my eyebrows waxed the other day, for the first time ever. Yes, really- ever.

Super thanks to Cassie from the FlyingDrunkenMonkey for her awesome videography skills- I totally owe you, Cass- a filming of something painful happening to you in a public place. Revenge best served cold and all that…. you’ll keep.

The lovely ladies from Nads have given me two packs to give away, each containing their Natural Hair Removal Gel and the Facial Hair Removal Wand… otherwise known as that awesome green squeezy wormy stuff. To win, leave me a comment on this post telling me- do you wax, or not? And why? This is a quickie- entries close Thursday 19th April at 8pm.

Winners drawn and notified soon after by email, to which they have 48 hours to respond or the prize is redrawn, at my discretion.. All entries must have a working email address attached to be considered valid. Answer that confuses, amuses, informs, disgusts or educates me the most wins, no arguments entered into because I am boss-lady of RRSAHM.

Aussie residents only, sorry everybody else. I can promise some international giveaways coming up very soon, and next month is a giveaway for my US of A jellybeans only– and it’s the coolest prize pack in the history of blogging. Really really. Stay tuned…

If i don't wax I become the bearded goat woman!! Been waxing for years, plucking in between when needed (always needed). Would love to try laser but not sure about pain. Have bad memories of running into a friend many years ago after she had laser (when laser was fairly new), and she was delirious from the pain, and had a red and bleeding face.

Haha that's funny! I wax and I'm used to the pain now but I had a friend talk me into trying threading once and I swear that shit HURTS! I almost didn't get the other brow done it hurt so bad. She thinks I'm crazy because I am covered in tatts and she has none and yet I found it so painful. Different strokes and all that I guess

I had a dream a couple nights back, and you were in it. I was vacationing in Australia for a week or two, and everyone kept telling me I should take this really great beach tour, but the only tours they offered lasted a month and a half, and I didn't have that long. And I said, I know someone who can show us the beach, and so we met up with you and took my 2 year old niece to the beach. It was nice, and you saved me from the huge expensive tour. I know, it makes no sense whatsoever. It was a dream. It's not my fault that it doesn't make sense. Blame my subconscious.

Ouch! I get my brows waxed maybe once a year? About a week later, after the redness has gone away and they're looking purty, I promise myself that I'll keep up with it. I make this promise every.single.time. Still only manage about once a year!

Reply

I've always been too scared to wax. It's honestly the going on part that scares me as much as the pulling off part – I mean, what if you put it on, realise you've gone too far, then how do you get it off??!

But still, I promised a friend I was going to be badass this week. Manda Hardy, taliana42 at hotmail dot com

I too have never had my eyebrows waxed, plucked or otherwise!
I am of Italian background too & I don't need it!
It was my 40th birthday year & the lady doing my nails kind of talked me into it….
The waxing wasn't too bad but the plucking HURT!! Like having bullants repeatedly biting you! It felt sore & bruised for days but the redness was gone instantly!
I can safely say fuck that!! I will NEVER try it again & thank god I don't need to!! OUCH!!

Lori you scared me! Not because of the eye brow waxing – have that done regularly, but you said Wednesday was the 19th! My son turns ten on the 19th – which is Thursday. For a moment I thought I'd have a 9 year old for one day less than I thought!! So not ready to have a 10 year old and a day makes a big difference!(BTW, does the comp close Wednesday or Thursday?? Which is right, the day or the date??)

Ok, so don't enter me, but I actually find an eyebrow wax to be relaxing. I tweeze between waxes, and my beautician usually tweezes to tidy up and that hurts way more.
Also, yes, jealous that you don't need to wax them, but I told you that ;)
I look like oscar the grouch if I don't tend to mine! Lol.

After somehow being convinced by a girlfriend to get our lady-parts waxed during a "spa" day–a full Brazilian no less!–I am *finally* brave enough to wax my eyebrows and legs. And as far as that Brazilian goes? Not only did I have to take my pants off in front of a stranger who is not my gynecologist, boyfriend, or mother, but I assure you, it's *every* bit as painful as it sounds. And somehow people willingly pay $50 for this service… brilliant business model.
Anyway, I'm seriously hoping that waxing my eyebrows will make me feel sexy/glamorous/less-like-a-caveman without so much of the half-naked cursing and lady-part bruising.

Lori,
Yes I do wax my eyebrows and am so jelly that this was your first time and tere were 3 hairs. When you come from Italian stock it is inevitable you will have "guy-brows" i find that I can't wax or pluck my own eyebrows at certain sensitive times of the month (as well as thought my whole pregnancy) so a lot of times I ripe my younger sister to do it for me. My family are so hairy that we gave our beautician tennis elbow (true story)
Take care and it was really good to see you smile- let us know how long it took for the red to "go down" (takes 3 days for me)

Swimming With Sharks. – RRSAHM

Swimming With Sharks.

by Lori Dwyer on November 5, 2013 · 8 comments

“…You’re not as brave as you were at the start.
Rate yourself and rake yourself
Take all the courage you have left
And waste it all on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head.”
Little Lion Man, Mumford & Sons

***

When you’re numb, the best way to feel alive is to live.

Skydive. Swing from a trapeze. Bolt through the river water of a freezing cold canyon.

Swim with sharks.

I planned my shark dive with RedBalloon a few months ago now, booking it for my birthday weekend. A celebration. Just another adventure for the girl who was not afraid of anything any more.

Then it got dark again and it became just another date on the calendar. I told my mum that I wasn’t scared of the idea of swimming with sharks… but it was impossible to feel particularly excited about it, either. I messaged Erin the Jungle Girl the morning of my dive, confessing to her that a tiny part of me was wishing I would have a limb bitten off… just so I could feel something. Anything.

A bit of terror can be good for the soul. Enlightening.

On Sunday, I wore my swimmers under my clothes and presented myself at the Aquarium. I filled in my forms. Signed away liability for my own safety. The dive briefing is quick and light and funny. The instructional video makes a point of stating that mental fitness is essential for scuba diving.

Sharkdive2

I don’t really understand the relevance of that until later, but I’m glad there was some kind of precursor, an obligatory warning. This was to be an exercise of my own mental discipline. A test of the dozen different mental survival strategies I’ve acquired, useful for being stuck in places where I just may panic.

Scuba equipment is ridiculously heavy. I’m wearing a wetsuit, gloves and a hood, a diving belt stacked with weights, a buoyancy pack and a small canister of air. I’ve also got water shoes (disturbingly similar to the ones I wore canyoning) and a massive pair of sixty centimetre-long flippers.

Including the instructor, there are four people in our dive group. The hands-on skills session, to teach us the basics of goggles and respirator mouthpieces, takes maybe fifteen minutes. We stand on a platform attached to the side of the massive, seven metre-deep ‘ocean’ style pool we’ll be swimming in.

A huge black sting ray, easily two metre-wide, swims in lazy, fluttering circles beneath us.

I pop my mouthpiece in and plunge my head beneath the cool, salty water. The scene before me is amazing- the water is perfectly clear, the animals abundant.

But breathing through that respirator… it’s the most disorientating, subtly desperate feeling. It mimics the breathing pattern of an anxiety attack– deep breaths through the mouth, rich with oxygen. For a moment, my body is confused. My brain picks up on my breathing and floods itself with chemicals. Adrenaline shoots to my fingertips.

‘This is not a panic attack, this is not a panic attack. You have plenty of air. You are not accustomed to breathing through your mouth. You will be okay, you will be okay… you will be fine.’

I repeat comforting, no-nonsense sentiments to myself over and over. I force myself to breathe, in and out, in and out. Deep and regular.

SharkDive3

A shark swims past my feet. My veins zing with electricity. I breathe out a massive, noisy tornado of bubbles; breathe in again. And I feel a steely, determined control clamp itself over my mind.

We swim from the training platform to a second, lower platform in the middle of the tank, slowly, one a time, eyes in the water. The world below is iridescent blue and spangled with fish.

It’s at that point I forget that I was panicking. This is insanely awesome.

The next time we move, it’s to descend. The instructor grabs me by my harness, deflates my buoyancy device, and I sink like a stone to the bottom of the aquarium floor. The Most Amazing Man and the kidlets have come along to watch me- the Shark Dive is held in the main tank of a public aquarium, so it’s completely a spectator sport. I spot my cheer squad and I’m so excited I smile with my mouth open and feel the spaces around my lips and gums flood with briny water. For a moment it feels as though I will breathe it in and I panic again.

But only for a moment.

The scariest part is being left, alone, laying on the floor of the tank while the instructor re-submerges to grab the next two and sink them into place next to me. Settled on my front, with fish the length of my arm swimming past… and that massive, gunmetal-grey stingray just two metres in front of me. He’s laying, as I am, on the gritty, sandy floor of the aquarium. He’s the size of a toddler bed and I’m stunned at his bulk. The middle of him, where intelligent black eyes gaze and blink at me, is as thick as my waist.

This is my new favourite family photo.

This is my new favourite family photo.

The stingray and I size each other up. He doesn’t move. Keeping a watchful eye on him, I press my hand up to the glass wall of the tank. My kids are on the other side. They’re bouncing, bubbling. The Most Amazing Man watches on, and I can tell by the look on his face that he’s proud of me.

The scuba instructor reappears beside me. He looks at me and points up. A grey nurse shark, three metres long, is cruising just a few feet above our heads. The shark’s stomach is pale and smooth, the cool grey colour of polished marble. His teeth are tiny, but sharp… and there’s just so many of them.

Sharks have dead eyes. Even close up, there’s no emotion behind their gaze. While the stingrays seem intelligent  stubborn and inquisitive, and the fish appear observant but completely unfazed, the sharks are just… cold. If they feel anything at all towards us, it’s impossible to see it. Their eyes appear to be simply scanners, assessing each item they pass as to whether it be food-stuff or threat. They register not a flicker of interest in us. They give nothing away.

Bizarrely, the sharks seem almost static. Their tails flick in the tiniest, smoothest of motions. Other than that, they glide seamlessly and determinedly through the water. Cold and calm.

The diving instructor has a long white pole, used for edging the sharks and large rays away from divers. He’s pointing the pole at the huge stingray in front of us, but doesn’t touch him with it. The instructor uses his arms to gesture to the creature to move. The stingray slowly, stubbornly concedes to glide along the floor away from us. He moves only a few metres before turning to face us again, curious. The dive instructor shoos him once more and the ray darts up, over our heads and into the other side of the tank.

It struck me, during the briefing, how much these dive instructors clearly love the animals in their tank. They refer to each animal by name- the huge grey nurse shark is ‘Murray’, the potato sharks ‘Spud’ and ‘Mash’. The instructors seem to know the nuances of each separate ocean creature, informing us which animals are timid, which are feisty, and which are always curious of new people in their territory. The last group includes a 230 kilo groper fish affectionately known as ‘Mr G’.

SharkDive4

Mr G cruises past us, looking exceptionally grumpy, on numerous occasions. We swim past swordfish sharks and cods. A school of silver fish, speckled with neon yellow, dart between us in a cloud. A bronze whaler shark glides by close enough for me to see where the name of the species originated- it’s skin is gleaming, the light reflecting off it a shiny light brown.

A guitar-sized, spotted leopard stingray is only a few feet from us when we first submerge, and follows us from a short distance away as we move around the giant tank. The three of us who are diving lay in a row on a platform deep inside the tank, looking over the ‘cliff’ at fish suspended in their underwater reality. The leopard ray glides up the side of the cliff and in between myself and the diver next to me. It skims it’s flat underside over my arm and I can feel the shiver of it’s wings, the weight of it, as it moves along my wetsuit.

This is the most visually intense thing I’ve ever experienced. That physical sensation aside, there is no other sensory input– you can’t hear, smell or feel anything, all you can taste is salt. But the world before me is blue and moving, alive with all forms of swimming mysteriousness.

There’s the odd feeling of having become the main attraction in the tank. People point and wave to us, small children give us high fives through the glass.

I know this feeling, it’s oddly familiar. Being in a fish tank. Watching normal people live their normal lives outside of it. Trying to communicate with them, but being unable to speak.

Half an hour in the water is long enough, but nowhere near enough time. My body is cold, my fingers frozen. But it’s so enthralling, so visually mind blowing. I could relax here, on this ledge, all day; watching fish and sharks slide by me. A silent, prosaic intrusion on their world.

We surface and I’m elated. My body is aching- the pressure of the water, the weight of the equipment, the high peaks of adrenaline interspersed with a that strange edgy tranquillity. But my mind feels a bit more alive than it did half an hour ago.

I meet up with the kidlets and the Most Amazing Man, and my kids are bursting. “We saw you in the tank with the sharks Mummy, we saw you!!”

There’s no nicer feeling than your children being visibly proud of you, being awed at what you’ve done.

I come home, take a hot shower. Babble on and on to the Most Amazing Man about what I’ve done, the things I witnessed underwater. I pull out my iPad. My pensieve.

And, for the first time in weeks, I lose myself in writing. I stay up late, fingers tapping on my flat screen keyboard, attempting to record all that I’ve seen. Trying to capture the blueness of that underwater world in words.

For pity's sake people, haven't you ever seen a birthmark before? – RRSAHM

For pity’s sake people, haven’t you ever seen a birthmark before?

by Lori Dwyer on February 21, 2010 · 14 comments

Hey y’all,

Now, in case you haven’t noticed from previous pics in previous posts, my darling little Bump has a birthmark. A hematoma, to be technical. And quite frankly, I get sick of people asking about it. Now, I’m not talking about kids- they are naturally curious, and, to quote Stephen King, honesty is a privilege of children that grown men must give up*.

I’m talking about the adults who choose not be grown up and tactful about it. The one’s who blurt out “What’s that thing on her head?”(See below). The ones who look at me sympathetically and say things like “There, there, dear. You can always have it removed.” (Yes, but what a pity, your face is a permanent fixture) The family members who tell me how much they hate it, because “That’s all you can see, when you look at her” (Really? you missed the big blue eyes?), and inquire as to whether we can Photoshop it out of family photos. (Ummm, no, for so many reasons. Least of all that I don’t know how to use effing Photoshop anyway).

In fact, I’m so sick of answering questions from idiots, I think I may just have some neat little A5 flyers printed. They will have this picture on one side

and the following text on the other.

Questions about my ‘love spot’?
Yes, it’s a birthmark.
No, it won’t get any bigger.
Yes, it will go away. By the time I turn two, apparently.
No, it doesn’t hurt.
No, it’s not cancer.
Yes, I’m sure.
No, doesn’t matter what your in-laws best friend’s god son’s birthmark turned out to be.
No, I’m pretty sure Mummy is planning not have it removed.
Yep,
I’m pretty sure if I was your five month old, you’d feel the same.
*sigh*No, really, it doesn’t need to be removed.
Yes, I’m sure Mum will reconsider if it’s still there when I’m five.
No, really, it’s nice of you to offer, but if we wanted the name and number of a cosmetic surgeon I’m sure we would have asked.
OK, yep, whatever, I’ll just pop a local anesthetic in my own forehead and mum will cut it out with a butter knife.
No,
I’m sure
that wouldn’t leave a scar.

Heaven forbid I had a child who was missing an arm, or a big toe, or something vital like that. Good grief, what would people have to say then?

Here
is the Wiki link for those who want some real info on hematoma (Ha! Real info! Go Wiki!).

And thanks for listening, I do feel better now.

* From Stephen King’s “Apt Pupil”, a ‘novella’ in the book Different Seasons. Probably paraphrased.

Hey it's me again, I'm staking you today. Anyway, I just found this post too! I have a child with a hemangioma on her chin, it's about the size of a jellybean. I got the same questions you wrote of above … drove me INSANE. It's actually faded heaps since she was born (she's now nearly 4) and we call it her 'map'. Apparently other kids don't ever ask her anything about it but some adults have even tried to wipe it off her like it's jam or something!

Hey sweet,
I too suffer from random and all to frequent comments from tactless strangers,
My daughters affliction?… RED HAIR,
I have lost count of the times I have been stopped in the supermarket, parents room….. to have complete strangers look my little girl up and down and feel the need to tell me what an awful thing it is to have red hair, "well at least there is a little blonde in it" or "hopefully it will grow out by the time she starts school" or my personal favorite, " dont let her out in the sun with that hair… she will end up all awful and freckly" Well to them I say, "that Hair" belongs to my beautiful, smart, funny little princess, so get a big black dog up you, and worry about your own sun damage, pickeled is the new red hair… Ranga's rock!

She is just beautiful! And your funny-take-it-all-in-stride answers to those tactless questions made me laugh out loud!

Forget the flier, have half printed on the front, the rest on the back of a jumpsuit and whack it on her, or better yet, a jumpsuit that says I may have a hematoma but it's none of your business so don't bother commenting would prob be more effective ;). Gosh some people are rude and stupid! I'm sorry you have to deal with these stupid comments and questions. I barely noticed it btw :)

Hi Lori, I can sympathise too, with my hubby having a birthmark which covers one side of his face. When people ask he says "it's a birthmark" and that's it. Nobody asks if he can have it removed…or other insensitive or thoughtless questions that you are encountering. Perhaps it is because they are talking to you and not the actual birthmark recipient…I dunno, maybe a sign on your gorgeous bubs that says "All birthmark questions will be answered by me." That should stop 'em! Good luck!

Lori, Olivia has fairly large Nevus Flammeus (Port Wine Stain) about the size of an egg on her neck. So I feel every bit of your vent and frustration. Your Bump looks like a grade A peach to me. Those blue eyes are mesmerising.

Sarah February 22, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Photoshop it out??? WTF??? Maybe you can just photoshop them out of the photos. Bump is adorable & to be honest I hardly see her birth mark when I look at her. I see her grin (very much like big brother's) and her beautiful eyes (which are happy smiley eyes like her mummy).

Z has a very large birthmark on his bum & top of his thigh & the comments I've gotten from certain family members is horrible so I feel your pain hunni.

Well if ppl cant see past it and notice her gorgeous blue eyes and bubbley smile, then thats there problem. Little Missy is perfect the way she is birthmark and all.
"inquire as to whether we can Photoshop it out of family photos." to read this made me feel sick in the stomach!! it is wrong on so many levels, and they should be ashamed of them selfs!

i know i love little miss bump just the way she is….

Goodness how frustrating!
Your little girl is adorable, and people should learn how to keep their nosy questions to themselves!

Love your take on the flyer, very clever.

alliecat February 22, 2010 at 8:01 am

People can be so tactless and thoughtless. She is your beautiful baby and there is 99.99% of her that is unaffected by this tiny mark. Why can't they focus on how cute she plainly is?!

Photoshopped out? God, that is the most heartless and rude thing I have heard of in a while. as you say, God forbid someone's child had a terrible disfigurement.

I agree, go for the flyer, at least it might stop them in their tracks and reconsider such thoughtless comments in the future!

Unsolicited advice at it's worst. One would never ask such rude questions about an adult so why is it ok when in relation to a baby. How frustrating for you!

Kellyansapansa February 22, 2010 at 6:22 am

Aaagghh, how frustrating for you! I would definitely be pointing out to them just how rude their inane questions are. You must have the patience of a saint!

Honeycomb. And Jellybeans.

My mate Spagsy sent me this poem on Twitter not long after I published the post Bubbles.

My At-Last Lover By Dorothy Parker

My At-Last Lover By Dorothy Parker

I love it. And seeing as The Most Amazing Man In The Universe will be here in just thirty three hours (give or take….) I thought I’d share.

“…like honeycomb.” Indeed. Dorothy Parker knows her stuff.

In other news… what do we think of the new look blog, jellybeans…?

I’m going with a massive ’Like’.
