The Fashionista – RRSAHM

The Fashionista

The Bumpy Fashionista.

The Bumpy Fashionista.

Many, many moons ago I wrote a blog post (the last blog post, actually, before the whole world changed for good) confessing my anti–fashionista status. Complete with embarrassing photo.

Not an awful lot has changed, really. I’m still a massive dag. I’m getting slighter better as I get older.

Kind of.

The Bump, however, has taken to dressing up with a totally different attitude to her mum. I’m not sure where she get hers fashion sense from… but it rocks.

Given the ‘choose your battles’ mentality that I employ most days, the Bump is now her own stylist, and picks her own clothes. Which leads to some absolutely glorious outfits. Friday’s choice, for school drop and daycare, was this stunning bridal ensemble.

Veil, party dress, gummies. As you do.

Veil, party dress, gummies. As you do.

The Bump taken to raiding my wardrobe as well, of course. To her frustration there’s only two or three dresses that “spin properly, Mumma!!”. And she’s not allowed to wear my dresses out of the house, which causes many teary tantrums. (My pretty girl throws herself dramatically only the floor, only to bump her head in her melodrama. “Mummy!!” she screams, rubbing the rising swell of her eyebrow, “I have hurt my frown and I neeeeeeed it!!!”)

The Bump’s personal favorite.

I’m not sure if she gets her fluffy, frilly pink girlishness as a result of having so few male influences, or if she’d inherently be this way anyway. I find myself encouraging it without really meaning to… feminism aside, she is just so damn cute.

But some days are better than others. Some days she’s beautiful, even color coordinated.

Some days she's even color coordinated.

Some days she’s even color coordinated.

Other days… well. Other days, I guess she just takes more after me.

And other days... she takes after me.

And other days… she takes after me.

So glad that she loves the dress. I saw a beautiful fluffy dress in my travels while finding your gifts and am kicking myself now that I didn’t get it. She would have adored it!

My mother in law made my daughter wonderfully twirly circle skirts, which have been worn to death. I’m working on making her some more, because every girl should have a skirt she can twirl.

Fridays are a great day for flogging. – RRSAHM

Fridays are a great day for flogging.

by Lori Dwyer on August 6, 2010 · 14 comments

Mushi mushi blog floggees!!

OK, here’s the bit where I was going to write something kick arse funny. But I don’t think I’m even going to try today. I am in serious pain here, people. It’s a *ahem* personal problem. I think it’s suffice to say it involves multiple doctors trips, some serious antibiotics, a plethora of ointments and creams and a script for muscle relaxants. Oh, it’s stripped away any remaining dignity I had. Which, after childbirth and the first few agonizing weeks of breastfeeding, is, ya know, not much.

On the upside- there is nothing funnier than an honest toddler in a packed doctor’s waiting room. So stay tuned for a blog post on it all, eventually. Once the pain recedes enough for me to computize without bursting into tears.

Righto, that is well and truly enough about me. Let’s get flogging and share the big linky love in, mmkay? If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check out last week’s post. It’s got all the gory details.

The New Rules (which are kinda almost pretty much the same as the Old Rules)
  1. Follow my blog. (*ahem* *cough* My Blog. Me me me. Me me. You get the picture.)
  2. Grab B’s bubbly button and post it on your sidebar.
  3. Link your First Name and/or Blog Name and URL of your linked post (not your homepage) below.
  4. Add a short description (max of 125 chars). It could be a description of yourself, your blog or a teaser to your latest post.
  5. Follow at least 1 linkyer/blogger (Be nice and spread the love).
  6. The list will be open for linkyers on Fridays (and for the foreigners Friday as well).
  7. A new and fresh link list will open every Friday. And you will have to link up AGAIN. The previous link list does not carry over to the following week.
  8. And lastly, have lotsa fun. I mean it. If I detect anyone not totally loving the awesomeness, I will bump you off the linky list. (Joking) (Kinda).

You did it how many times??? – RRSAHM

You did it how many times???

by Sarah Hawker on July 1, 2010 · 15 comments

Shh! It’s sexy guest post number two from Sarah at Just Me

Hello lovely Lori followers,

It’s my turn today to talk to you about s. e. x.

I’m sure that both Lucy & Lori have wonderful stories about their post children romps, but sadly no such luck there’s no interesting story in the Just Me house post children. Though I am thinking it’s about time to rectify that!

My story is from long ago, prior to children & even prior to marriage. Oh my goodness I hear you all say, “you had sex before marriage?” Yep indeedily doodily I did, but it doesn’t count because we were engaged ok?

We were both 18, (yes I was engaged at 18) it was a friend’s 18th birthday and hubby’s parents were out of town so you can imagine what we did….. Had a party at their house of course.

The party was as can be expected drinking, singing bad karoake & all that sort of stuff….

At some point during the night hubby (well, fiance at the time) & I retired to his bedroom. The relationship was still very new and well you can imagine where it went.

Someone once told me that a man can physically only have sex three times in one day. Let’s just say we bypassed three, four, five, six and finished off at seven…. I think it was a space of around 12 hours.

One tip if you go for a marathon though…… Beware of aaahhh friction burns, apparently they are quite painful ;)

The Garden of The Evening Star – RRSAHM

The Garden of The Evening Star

by Lori Dwyer on April 2, 2012 · 18 comments

It’s the night of DPCon’12, and I’m so exhausted even red lipstick isn’t helping. At the equivalent to this conference last year, in 2012, I was two months out from Tony’s death and so disconnected from the world, it felt like a dream… a nightmare that belonged to somebody else.

It was one of the best days of my life. It was one of the hardest. I spoke, not particularly well. I retreated, disappeared into my room every hour or so, where I sat on the floor in front of the mirror and reminded myself I was real, I did exist, this wasn’t a dream. Somewhat back in some kind of reality, I regrouped, then held my head high and walked back into the fray. I spent a lot of that day mindlessly hugging people who desperately wanted to take away my pain and couldn’t; while I was struggling, mute to the words I needed to tell them how much they had helped, how they kept me alive, what they’d done for me. So I’d just squeeze them as I tight as I could, hoping they could feel it through my the weight of my arms around them.

I was my own living, breathing proof of survival that day, as I stood on a stage in front of 200 people and recounted the details of the last two months of my life. It was horrific. The conference itself was mind–blowingly amazing– a community that had existed only behind a screen suddenly come to life, moving and jumping and laughing and hugging and talking and meshing, the room pulsating with energy.

Best known image credit according to the Google God is here.

I spoke and it stung like fire, like baptism; but it was the balm to it’s own pain. It was watching a room full of people feel your suffering, and wishing they could take it away, just for a moment… if for no other reason than they just couldn’t stand to hear it in my voice anymore.

Today I witnessed a woman, beautiful and brave and as real as they come, tell a whole room full of people her story, share with them the day that changed her life.

It felt like watching a ghost of myself.

I began crying even before Kristie, who blogs at Hespera’s Garden, took the stage. The photos projected onto the screen behind her, taken by Fe from Heartfelt, an image of Kristie’s face crumpled in pain as she cradled the lifeless body of her stillborn son Avery… there is no pain that compares to a mother, sobbing so distraught that if there was a God, he must be deaf.

I watched as she faced a crowd of 200 people, some who knew what she was about to say, some who didn’t. With her, I took a huge breath, and I watched as she set her words, her story, the memory of her precious baby boy, and let them fill the entire room.

All those words, those big words that bring with them images of something so huge in its meaning you can’t quite find the adjective big enough– words that fall in line with ‘amazing’ and ‘incredible’ and ‘inspiring’– Kristie was the spoken essence of those words. The entire crowd hushed, no one whispering or shuffling or daring to rustle the almost sacred silence that had fallen over the room.

My heart broke with every word Kristie spoke. I was so proud of her, I thought I would burst. I wanted to stand up and cheer. I wanted to run to the stage while she was in mid-speech and hug her and tell her how brave she was, how we were all holding her in our hands right now as we watched her navigate between emotion and composure– an audience connected by gossamer threads of compassion, a net with which we would catch her if she should happen to fall, this woman who was brave enough to be vulnerable, generous enough to share her story and show her pain.

That’s brave, with no disclaimers, no opt–outs, nothing but yourself and your emotions and the truth. Being vulnerable, being real, exposing yourself at risk of being hurt… knowing that risk and taking the chance anyway. A leap of faith. Saying ‘This is me, this is real. I am giving to you of myself here more than you know, and it requires me to trust human nature enough believe that no one will kick me when I’m down, no one will rub salt into a wound they can see bleeding.’

That’s brave. That’s strength. That was Kristie, speaking with dignity and conviction and love for her children, a love that doesn’t abide by silly laws such as mortality or ‘getting over it’.

The room was dark, and I was glad for that as I sat, snug, between Miss Pink and Kell and watched Kristie do something akin to what I had done, twelve months beforehand, only better, with more passion, less of a sense of shell chock than I displayed in 2011. I heard the pain and trepidation in her voice, and I cried, lip quivering, attempting to hold my head back so I didn’t smudge my make up, as Kristie introduced herself, gave us her background.

“Then, on the 14th of July, everything changed…”

Change the date, and I spoke words almost identical to that a year ago.

And with that I broke. I leaned on Miss Pink’s shoulder and bawled. I sobbed, head in my hands, shoulders shaking, breath hitching. I cried for Kristie, for Avery, for me, for Tony. For Kirrilee and Ella. For Amanda and Greg, for Teni and Scott and Ianto, for Krysten and Payten.

I cried for all of us who are grieving, every person in that room, in this community, reading this blog, hearing this story… Every mother or father or wife or husband or brother or sister or friend… For anyone who feels, anyone with that pain, keening for the warmth that is now a space that cannot be filled.

Kristie spoke the honest, brutal truth, and it was beautiful. She spoke openly about the weight of a baby, not moving, being placed on her chest. Her voice lowered, and she described, hitches of pain throughout, how she begged her baby boy to please, please wake up, please. She screamed her son’s name, fresh with pain, into the space of that room and we felt a roll of thunder, a mother’s grief, come with it.

“Avery! Avery! Avery!!” I have never witnessed anything so powerful in my entire life. It shook the room, stopped them. It was so real, so honest, so damn brave. Shock and awe and an infinite respect for a woman who had not only gone through this pain, but has the courage and the strength of will to share it, to release it into the universe; to not only honor her son, but to ease the suffering of others simply by giving them the knowledge that they are not alone, that someone else out there understands the desolate pain mixed with intense love that is grief
.

Kristie’s speech had become more than a story about a blog, about a woman, about a baby. Kristie stood and put herself bare and she told her story and it echoed of thousands of mothers, thousands of fathers, brothers and sisters; the story of thousands of babies who never drew breath.

Powerful. Brave. Amazing. We watched this woman, collectively in a state of amazement.

As Kristie finished her speech and walked off stage to a ringing mountain of applause; I recognised that tiny bounce in her step, the little bit of lightness, and I remembered the heady high of it. Of being terrified, but knowing that this– this ?- is nothing compared to what you have already had to do, burying someone you loved more than yourself. The filling, warming rush that comes of being afraid and doing it anyway and then being so damn proud of yourself; the adrenalin rush that would follow for hours.

I wanted to wrap Kristie up and hug her, and I did, as soon as I got the chance. I told her she was awesome, brave, amazing– I was so damn proud of her I could have popped.

Everyone who lives any type of life finds themselves grieving someone or something, at some point. But it’s made shunted and difficult, and it’s shamed and silenced. We put time limits on it (“Shouldn’t you be over this by now?”) and we discourage people from expressing their pain, because it just makes everybody uncomfortable (“You can’t cry for him, his spirit will stay stuck here on earth if you cry”).

People who are suffering through the loss of someone they love, foot in front of foot, second by endless second… we are difficult and messy, no one knows what to say to us. And there is nothing that can be said to eases that whole–soul, all encompassing ache.

No one likes to feel helpless, to be frustrated, to be unable to change something so painful. Those in mourning, screaming out their hands to be saved by people who can’t swim. As people, generally, we see someone else’s discomfort, their inability to handle what we have to say, and we learn not to talk about grief or loss or the chasm of longing it leaves behind. We stay silent, and when people ask “Are you OK?”, we lie.

I gave this Little Miracles card to Kristie, sealed. Apt.

Except when we don’t. Except for those people who are brave enough to take that pain, open it up to the corrosive oxygen of the world, and say– here it is. This is real. This is death and life and love and living. And I know you all have your own pain too.

There are not many people brave enough to speak about grief, to face the discomfort it causes others and still be honest, still tell the story of their pain and their loss and the short life of their gorgeous baby boy. It takes guts and confidence and balls and all kinds of awesome.

And every time someone does, every time someone is brave beyond the call of what any reasonable god should expect of them to begin with, and then chooses to be stronger still by speaking out and  showing others they are not alone… Every time that happens, the silence surrounding death and the unquantified shame in grief becomes a little louder, whispers start to come from the darkness. People in pain, who feel what we feel and who need to know that someone understands, even just a little bit, to return to them some emancipation of normality.

I love people who are brave. I love people who are honest. Kristie was both of those; and strong and dignified to boot.

I once thought that there could be no beauty in grief, no cause for any measure of reflection or salvation to come from that pain. Tonight, I saw Kristie through the eyes of the audience that witnessed my pain twelve months ago. And she proved me wrong.

Wow. Just wow……
I've not experienced grief quite like that in my life, but at 8.5months pregnant I could put myself there and feel a tiny piece of the pain your post describes.
Such beautiful honesty, such baring of your torn heart, it is cathartic, and empowering, but it s only one of many steps in the journey of healing.
I send love and light to all who go through this terrible loss. Thanks for the reminder of how every day is so precious.

Amazing that reading it again through your retelling I am choked up just as i was in that Melbourne room – it was such a raw and honest speech. I was one of the people who had not heard it before so it grabbed me and had me sobbing like crazy in that room and I had to go up to Kristie and hug and thank her for sharing.

I spoke about my grief, my pain, my misery, my sadness. I spoke about all of it. But most people didn't know how to respond. They all backed off. All of them … except one. She knew the pain of grief. Her fiance died an unexpected death … she knew about grief. She knew about people's response (or lack thereof). People like her are few. Only now, 2.5 years after my youngest son's death, am I appreciating how sensitive she was with us.

Beautifully written, Lori. I agree with you. I'm of the belief that there is, in fact, beauty in pain. It is in the intensity of the love we feel, so big it seeps out of us. There is beauty in managing to breathe in and breathe out. There is beauty in the strength you and Kristie had, sharing your loves and your hurt. And there is beauty in the way that we find those souls that not only let us share it, but open their hearts up to be moved and inspired and love you right back. That grieve with you and for you.

There IS beauty, Lori in you. In your loss. In Kristies. Doesn't mean I wouldn't change it in a heartbeat if I could. But I refuse NOT to see that there is a type of beauty and grace to it all. Even when it's so ugly we can't bear it.

It has taken me 4 tries and a lot of tissues to read this. ….the first time I got to the picture of the house and the tears started. ….the second time, I got to your description of Kristie's bravery. …and then you mentioned me and Greg and I had to go sob somewhere my kids couldn't hear me. So powerful for me to read those words from someone else who knows….
Grief is raw and intense and the pain cuts like a knife. …and when we share it, we open ourselves up to those who would try and "fix" us instead of just abiding with us. Just being there. But we share so that we feel less alone and so that others feel less alone when grief hits them….

Exactly. You were proven wrong! That is so amazing. I remember that moment… where I stopped cutting people off who were trying to tell me how strong I was for blogging the way I have. Now I say thank you. You must. Because it is true, no matter how much you don't actually want to be strong! Hold the lantern high, Lori, as Kristie has also shown it can be done xxxx (ok, ok, and me too… ;-)

I never thought of it this way before. When we share our stories of loss, in the midst of everyone urging us not to, we are brave. Thank you.

What a beautiful heart wrenching post. You are so right that people put a time limit on OUR grief. When I had a miscarriage with my exciting first pregnancy over 19 years ago I was made to feel my grief was not valid. It was not a baby and therefore I was not to feel sadness for long as my pain was nothing compared to others who had lost real babies.
Even the nurse,in a room full of all other patients visitors, stood at the end of my bed and said loudly "they will be coming to take you to theatre for a clean out soon"I was made to feel guilty for my streaming tears and breaking heart.I still do as yes there are others who have lost real babies and I shouldnt feel this pain.
Thankyou for making me feel there are all kinds of grief and our grief is real and it is ok to feel it.

A Very Westfield Christmas to You! – RRSAHM

A Very Westfield Christmas to You!

by Lori Dwyer on November 1, 2010 · 24 comments

Noel and wrapping paper, jellybeans,

First off, this is another one of those posts that are sponsored by Nuffnang. But do read on, Aussie people, it could win you a Westfield shopping voucher….

It recently occurred to me that it is November. HolymotherofClaus, November. You know what that means…? That’s right. Only about six more weeks before you have to give out a sleigh load of presents to people you only see once or twice a year. Huzzah!!

And to make that even better-er, if that’s possible, there is only approximately three weeks before your local shopping centre is consumed into absolute bedlam and it becomes every women, man and nanna for themselves. Out of my way, Grandma, I will deck you for that last singing Santa penguin. Double huzzah!! Or something.

Hecticness. This is the part where I confess that I am a total Christmas tight arse. I hate spending a fortune on Christmas gifts. The kidlets presents are already sorted. I’ve been buying their gifts throughout the year, as I see them on special. The Man, I’ll think of something for. Myself, well, I normally get more presents off me than anyone else, so that’s fine. OK? OK.

Which leaves the dreaded In Laws, Distant Family and Random People gifts. Dunn dunn dunn.

You know what I’m talking about, I’m sure the do. These are the people I was referring to earlier- the ones you only see once or twice a year, but have to buy stuff for anyway. Because they buy stuff for you. Mostly gift baskets with soap and shower gel, but, hey it’s the thought that counts.

And a shower gel gift basket is definitely better than no present at all. Confession time, people- how many times have you been caught out, without a gift for someone…?

Me? Erm… lots? Last year was the worst for it. The older my children get, the more random people we know, the more likely I am to forget to buy them a gift. The pinnacle of my failure was last year, when some of the Man’s friends dropped in with beautifully wrapped presents for both our kids. And I had nothing for their kid. It ended with me, scrummaging for something suitable in the mammoth pile of kid’s presents at the top of my wardrobe, and coming down with a stuffed Elmo. Elegantly wrapped in a black plastic garbage bag.

They were stoked.

Whatever. I am determined that this year, that will not happen.

And that’s where Westfield comes in. I luuuurve Westfield. Huge, but not so huge that you get lost. Minimal Christmas madness. Plenty of parking- there’s even valet parking at Parramatta and Bondi Junction, ooooh la la!

One of Westfield style experts, Trish Murray, says “Perfect gift givers are always (over)prepared”. Oh so muchly true. This will be my mantra this year. Not just prepared, but exploding with tinselly over-preparedness.

And, just to make me happy and make my life easier (because that is why all good things happen the world), Westfield have just released a new online gift finder.

I think I’m in love.

So simple even I can use it. You select the age group you’re shopping for, whether they are M or F, and then set how much you want to spend. And the gift finder tells you the best stuff to buy. Awesomeness.

It’s just almost like window shopping at Westfields, without having to leave the house. You can check if the presents you find available in store.

So…. to solve my In Laws, Distant Family and Random People gift problem, I decided to do some research. And here’s the options I’ve found….

 Puppy Flat Friends.

Oh so gorgeously cute and cuddly. And perfect hideaway gifts for kids I’ve forgotten to buy for.

Calendar.

Because who doesn’t love a calendar? The perfect present to wrap and stash in the back of your car for when gifts are sprung on you at mum’s group or you realise you’ve neglected to buy a gift for Great Aunt May (who may not be able to see the calendar, but will appreciate it anyway. And hey, she bought you a shower gel gift basket, so what do you care…?).

Darrell Lea Candy Carton.

Nom nom nomish. Another one of those perfect presents to wrap and keep under the tree for people who you have totally forgotten about. Give this one out last though- if you’ve been really good, and haven’t forgotten too many people, you can unwrap it yourself. And call it a reward.

Now, that painful subject aside, while I was playing with with the gift finder, I had a quick look at gifts for the Man. And, well, me. For the Man (M, 30 +, $50, told you I’m a tightarse), we get this…

Which is just the funkiest thing ever. And I am buying it for him. He doesn’t own an iPod, and neither do I. I do not care. I’m buying it anyway.

And for me (F, 25-30 (no, I’m not 30 yet), $50), we get a pair of squishy, sparkly Peter Alexander slippers.

Westfield, you know me all too well.

OK. Enough of my waffle. Here’s your chance to win a $100 gift voucher to spend in the Westfield nearest you. What I want to know is- who do you always forget to buy for? Do you have a stash of presents for In Laws, Distant Family and Random People? What’s in it?

You have until 5pm on the 15th November to leave a comment on this post with your answer, and the bestest answer wins. But don’t bother trying to bribe me with shoes or chocolate, I’m not judging. Australian peeps only. (Sorry again to my OS readers- I will run a giveaway for you funny-talking people soon, promise.) Fine print time- T & C’s are here.

I decided to write you a little poem, enjoy.

A Barbie for Ella, an iPod for Penny,
Rollerblades for Ethan and perfume for Jenny,

A bike for Max and a trampoline for Donna,
Lucy wants a teddy plus a scooter for Conner,

Nic wants a console, maybe a Wii?
I think that's it, but what about me?

A hair curler or sandals, maybe some wine?
Even chocolates would do me just fine.

The cost is enormous, it'll make me yelp,
But a voucher from Westfield sure would help!

I will be honest, I would kill for a $100 voucher for Xmas shopping this year, because my SAHM role this year has brought me in $0 dollars, aside from some free bread and chocolate via the blog (at least we didn't starve those weeks).

Continuing on with my honesty, the one person I forget to buy for at Xmas is ME. I run around like a headless chicken buying things for the kids, hubby, parents, the kids' cousins, goddaughter, neighbours' kids, friends kids, my friends…and I'm lucky to get one pressie from hubby under the tree!

I used to have a stash last year, but it ran out…my stash of gifts ended up being used for birthday presents as well as for Xmas. I'm all out this year, which is a bit of a worry!

For some reason I always forget my nephew. For years I would get proud of myself for getting it all finished early, only to realise I hadn't gotten something for him (teenage boy) – cue quick call to sis to find out what sort of thing a cool/smart teenage boy would like and last minute run to the shops. Inevitably, it seems he always was the winner out of that deal since my last minute buying meant he got something a bit dearer than most others. ;)

Ok, once upon a time, we had a member of the family (who shall remain nameless for my own protection) who used to give us awful gifts. Not being one to look an awful gift horse in the mouth (and now that I've called them a horse I may have given away who the family member is), I'd graciously accept the gift, grumbling in the meantime about the awesome gift we had given them. And I'd take those awful gifts and stash them in a cupboard and regift them.

Suffice to say, there are only so many awful gifts I can regift without looking like an awful gift giver myself. So the last of them was listed on Ebay not too long ago (there is always someone more evil than me out there, so it seems).

That was my stash of miscellaneous presents for miscellaneous people. We are no longer in the habit of giving gifts to peripheral people and have narrowed it to just the kids of the family, instead lavishing visitors to our home with gorgeous yummy food and hospitality.

The End.

I always forget my sister's boyfriend. IS that bad? I am yet to even do that "here is a gift for both of you" thing :
This year i feel really guilty, but damn that guy has expensive taste (like wears $80 shirts. Seriously, are there actually t-shirts out there that cost that much?? Apparently so!).

My husband drives me nuts every year. He is all for surprises, and I like to write lists and get excited about receiving the things on that list! Makes life very difficult. If I don't tell him what I want, he won't know what to get… yet if I give him suggestions, he "can't" get those things because then they won't be a surprise!

Worst Christmas present ever – an ironing board. It was our first Christmas together, and he is lucky it wasn't our last!

Best Christmas present ever – the giggles and excitement that comes from my 3 little ones when they wake up on Christmas morning and discover their presents. I've been spoilt rotten over the years by some of the loveliest material things (jewellery, clothing, spa vouchers, holidays), but those little faces are more precious than anything else!

I've never bought for distant family and certainly not for random people. My immediate family get gifts when they're young, and gift vouchers or cards when they're older. Teenagers get mobile phone or i-tunes credit. Relatives living away get christmas cards only. They all know I'm limited with funds, most of them are too, so nobody minds. I love the idea of Westfields online gift finder though, I may make use of that next year, for ideas at least.

You're so welcome Lori! Hope you had a blast on your b-day and thrown some candies in between:) Come on.. candies are always fun, right?:) Oh and i love the last minute gifts ideas… i gotta do that this year. I never have those last minute gifts under the tree and when people come over, i just give them cookies and such.. which btw.. i guess that's the reason people try avoiding coming over unless they know for sure there's a present for them under our tree.. hi hi:) Now problem solved! thanks;)

Now that I have children I've found they have a better social life than me. If there are bargins in the catalogues that my kids would love, grab it, they'd make a great gift. On a side note I keep a little word document as a 'stocktake' where I list things as I buy them, that way I don't have to pull everything out of the top of the cupboard when I need something, I consult the list and go from there!

Bronnie and family November 1, 2010 at 6:10 pm

My mother taught me to have a 'present box'. No, it's not rude, it's a box containing cool stuff you buy on special throughout the year so that it's there when it comes to birthdays and Christmas. Except … at one stage the present box grew and grew until it became a closet. I'm still working my way through it, and can say there are only one or two gifts left. As for kids, I always find putting some cash in a card is always a winner for those 'pretending-I've-not-forgotten' occasions. And a bottle of something and a card for the adults.

I have an Aunt, who we usually do see on Christmas (or Boxing) day, who's one of those 'on again, off again' gifters. One year it's "No we won't do gifts this year", and the next year she arrives with a basket of presents. Drives me nuts.

Reply

toushka November 1, 2010 at 12:41 pm

thankfully I got rid of the whole gift giving thing for adults a few years back and we only buy for children in our family. scrooge? yeah probably. do I care? nah. I love Christmas but if I had to buy a present for everyone in my hugemongous overseas family plus randoms and hangers on and neighbours and the postman I would be broke. seriously. It costs enough to send out the xmas cards!

I ALWAYS forget to buy a present for my Uncle Gerry. I can't stand him anyway but then I feel like the Worst Human Ever when he stands there pitiful and forlorn on Christmas day. Maybe this year I can buy him some stamps thanks to Westfield? $100 should be enough to wrap him up and post him off somewhere else shouldn't it?

Reply

Amy November 1, 2010 at 8:53 am

I always forget to buy for (and lets be honest, HATE buying for), random boyfriends and girlfriends of my cousins and various other family members. I had an incident once where I did buy a gift and they split up a few days before Christmas- which is yeah, awful for them, but also awful for me who'd spent a good hour picking out an appropriate gift!!! Not anymore! Now, they get gift vouchers until they qualify as 'stable' :P

I never have a stash for older people anymore, I try and have a stash of books for little people though,

I know lots of people bake and make goodies, but I am afraid that my skills are pretty poor in this area so best I stay with the basic soaps candles etc.

Ok so this list is not going to fit in the comments box which makes it obvious…I forget a lot of people…all year I think "oh I must get a xmas pressie" but by the time I get round to Xmas shopping the thought is gone , along with any hope of making up for last year ….dammit. This year is going to be the worst..we are Driving to Adelaide (from QLD) with a 6 month old who hasnt met half of my side of the family dammit! (bring on new years)

I am a gift giver i love to give, love to buy, love to wrap, love to do wonders with curling ribbon of all colours. One Christmas I showed up at mums place with a stack of envelopes that contained gift vouchers for my sister, brother in law, brother and his wife. I had wrapped gifts for mum dad and my niece. those went under the miniature tree on the table.
So lunch over and its time to 'Get down to business', my sister and sister in law who i get along with alternately and whenever they are in the mood, plonked themselves down in font of the tree tableau and started to say things like "oooh I wonder what we got?!" I love getting presents! how fun!" But I didn't bother buying presents for anyone this year!" ha ha ha Neither did I!" Oh well at least we might get something hey?! he he he"
You Fu*king WHAT??!!! horrified at their lack of gift giving spirit i reached over and grabbed their $400 dollars worth of vouchers and stashed them back into my handbag. Their Jaws dropped but nothing was said. Christmas day ended with a few people leaving in a huff but whatever, get me something don't get me something but don't sit there mocking me!
so I gave the vouchers to my husband who seems to always miss out or get uber crappy presents from my side of the family..

Let's Play Dress Ups!! – RRSAHM

Let’s Play Dress Ups!!

by Lori Dwyer on July 26, 2010 · 10 comments

Aloha,

I think we’ve established before, I luurve to play dress ups.

No, not in the kinky nurses and french maids way you’re thinking. Sheesh. Get your minds out of the gutter. The Man should be so lucky. If I were going to play with a feather duster, I’d do something novel with it. Like, say, dusting.

But I digress.

The years I spent working as a kids entertainer, supplying any number of characters- fairy, clown, witch, mermaid, pirate, cowgirl, princess, Bratz doll and so on and so forth, I’m your girl- have left me with not only a serious fairy floss hangover, but a massive collection of totally random dress up’s.

Which are just perfect for rainy days.

Before some bright spark asks, yes, I’m dressed up here. Boom tish.

We’ve got wigs, wings, hats, dresses, clown pants, braces, an umbrella and a few random juggling implements. And the clown shoes just go off like a frog in a sock. As you may have seen yesterday, everyone had a go of them.

The Chop has spent the last week flying the house like a butterfly.. erm… MasterChef style.

Is this not the cutest thing you have ever seen…? Lady Gaga, eat your heart out.

The Bump was not exactly impressed with dress ups, can you tell…?

Whatever. Be honest with me here- how do you think I’d go,as a blond…?

Yeah. That’s kinda what I thought too.

I’m totally cheating and linking this one up twice- for MummyTime’s iHappy Monday….

The Department of Fairy Trading.

The Department of Fairy Trading.

by Lori Dwyer on December 2, 2010 · 18 comments

Tinkle tinkle,

I mentioned a while back (approximately two to three weeks ago) that I had registered my existence as a ‘fey‘ with the Supernatural Registration Authority (SRA). It’s a free service that allows you to register your good self; be you vampire, witch, totally cool Justin Beiber fan, werewolf, troll, MySpace user or any other form of mythical creature.

Anyboo. Because I have the word ‘Sucker’ written across my forehead in bright red Posca pen, I paid $5 to have a an official registration certificate mailed to me. The Man was fairy very muchly less than impressed, but let’s ignore that and carry on. I felt like even more of a sucker when I realised you could get a certificate online and just print the freaking thing out for free. I had the good sense not to tell the Man about that discovery.

Which was most fortunate, because when the the official certificate showed up in the mail it was completely slightly different to the online one. Crisis of Wife Guilt averted. Kinda.

 Click to make it bigger…

Whatever. I now have a completely useless, totally awesome piece of paper that states that I am, in fact, fey. Just like my mother always said I was. The oh-so-witty Glen demanded photographic evidence that I am, in fact, a fairy. I don’t need a photo, Glen, I have a certificate. Ahhh, Glen. You underestimate me.

*Tinkle* *poof* *Puff of smoke* ….and here is Lori, all fairy-fied. Or Lily Petal, as was my fairy alias when I was doing kid’s parties*.

I have, in my time, been everything from a clown to a fairy to a witch to a mermaid to a pirate to Cinderella- no, wait, she’s copyright- Princess Ella and a Bratz doll Disco Diva. And, no, I don’t have photos of most of those, thanks very much for asking. This was all waaaaaay back in the day when digital cameras were still fairy very expensive and confusing. Tracking down the fairy photo took grueling hours a good twenty minutes of searching* through these things called ‘photo albums’ where people actually keep printed out copies of the photos they’ve taken. And there is no button that says “Share” or “Upload”. Trust me. I spent ages looking for it. Really. Not. Or something.

So.. erm.. there you go. I’m losing the plot. I’m a fairy.

*Doing children’s parties, is, by the way, completely outlawed by the SRA anyway, according to the fine print on my certificate. Now they tell me. It also clearly states here that I am over 150 years old. Looking damn good for my age.

Clickety cliak again, nanna-eyes. Who’s 154 years old  here, you or me?

**Whilst searching through piles of those old fashioned, slightly stinky things called ‘photo albums’ looking for this photo, the Man had the balls to tell me that I’m becoming awfully narcissistic, posting photos of myself on my blog all the time. This is undeniably, shamelessly true.

Sick. – RRSAHM

Sick.

by Lori Dwyer on December 16, 2013 · 18 comments

I tell people I’m not well right now, and it tastes like a lie.

If this was a physical illness (and maybe it should be called just that), I’d tell myself not to push too hard. To be kind to myself. To fill myself up with nourishment, to rest and allow myself time to just sit and be still and heal. For fear of becoming sicker.

There’s a nagging voice that tells me this is mind over matter, this is all in my head.

Both those things are true, but not true. The depressive’s paradox.

I remember Charlie the shrink asking me why I kept it all in, why I pretended I had this all under control, when clearly there was so much still to deal with.

Because I don’t want to do it alone, I told him. Because I want someone there to break my fall. Someone to fill in the pieces of my self esteem that I couldn’t resurrect myself.

And now I’m here. The Most Amazing Man is a constant. He holds me when I cry, makes me laugh when I hate myself. And he doesn’t stop loving me. Never once threatens to take himself away because the emotional fire of this onslaught is too hot and it burns.

It sucks for him. To have me, but not have me the way I was. The person he met is not the person I am now. The essence of me is still there. It’s just that all the strength has left me. I am a wasted wreck of the person I once was. I’ve found my safe space and I wallow in it, confident that when I breach the surface for air, he will still be there.

And he is. Every time. He supports the threads of our life, so I don’t have to. It’s not what he signed up for, we both know that. But he never complains, never resents me or the kidlets for it.

I trust him. I believe him when he says I will get better, and that he will still be here, no matter what.

***

One day at a time. Small things. Tiny goals. Touchstones with which to connect to reality. I shower. I take my meds. Today’s goal is writing this blog post. I try to keep myself busy. I pay attention to my thoughts, put up big red Stop signs in my head. Attempt to pinch off horrible thoughts before they spin themselves into a vortex I cannot push back out of.

I try to take control of my mind, one minute at a time.

***

If nothing else, I can do Christmas. The kidlets are so little. They deserve Christmas and all the good fun things that come with it.

It’s relatively uncomplicated and the process of buying, wrapping, listing, and caroling has very few horrible memories attached to it.

I mix things up. Occasionally I forget the little white lies that exist to keep Santa a real, believable concept. But the excitement of it, the magical element of the season… that allows me to fool my children with my shoddy, hard-won enthusiasm.

Our Christmas tree is a metaphor for my life right now. It’s lopsided, the decorations thrown on haphazardly. But it’s there, in all it’s symbolic glory.

It’s the best I can do right now.

It’s enough.

Thanks to everyone who left me a comment, or sent me an email. It reminds me that even when I can’t bring myself to care very much about me… there are other people who do.

It’s nice to hear these things. I’m struggling with a lot right now and I constantly think…why did my husband marry me…when I’m stuck in this sadness I can’t escape…but he stays there and just like your amazing man, he hugs me and holds me. Really when it comes down to it, we’re pretty lucky to have good men like that.

Love to you during your tough time. I know it’s hard, but please keep writing, I do enjoy reading your blog.

Thank God for TMITU, I’m so glad he’s there to support u & the kidlets. My vote is that u drive to the lost dogs home, find your soul mate & spring him/her.
Puppy-therapy :0)
After my miscarriage my Orange Dog held all of the fractured pieces of me together, stuck them in place with his sloppy kisses.
He’s carried me through the worst of my husband’s battle with severe depression. Cuddling him, smelling his paws (which oddly always smell like oatmeal cookies) never fails to lift my mood.
If I was there- I would get u a dog. I think the whole family needs a dog

Be kind to yourself Lori. I am glad you are getting help. I am also glad that you have found your safe place to fall. Sit with it. Feel all of it. And then slowly dig your way out of it. Hang in there. This will pass. And when it does, you will be in a much better place than before you fell. Things will get better.

This resonates deeply with me Lori, but more from the perspective of TMAMITU. I don’t claim a title so highly as his, but I am the partner of a mentally ill person who’s breakdown and various depression and PTSD diagnosis have prevented him from being able to work in the last 5 years. When things get tough, I remind myself of the realness of his illness. Liken it in my head to a cancer of the mind. It helps me to understand, support, empathise, stay patient and maintain realistic expectations both of him and of the illness and its treatment. Treatment can be tough and really take it’s toll, leaving him ill or unable to face the world, wanting to stay in bed. Sleep is difficult. Every day is different and there are good days and bad days, where his capacity for happiness, participation and an even temperament are either good or bad. He is doing everything he knows how, to get better. He wants to get better. Mental illness is as real as cancer. Its effects can be just as debilitating. Our expectations of those suffering should be the same. Perhaps your expectations of yourself should be the same. Wishing you well Lori xo

That cartoon is so great. While I’m all about having a positive attitude, all the cheery thoughts in the world don’t fix buggered up brain chemistry. It sucks you have to ‘prove’ it’s a ‘real’ illness, but so many folks get it. A lot of them show up here. And comment!

I hope that in making a sweet-ass Christmas for your kids, you find a little bit of cheer too. It might rub off! Sparkly lights help. Cakes too.

maybe it’s obvious, but maybe you can use a reminder.

life changes are stressors that can precipitate episodes. it doesn’t matter if they are positive life changes or not; they’re still stressors.

so really, this here is a thing that could have been expected and predicted. you always hope it won’t come, but sometimes the best you can do is hold on until it passes.

be gentle. remember to get some exercise and also to eat your vegetables.

This Place Is Yours – RRSAHM

This Place Is Yours

by Lori Dwyer on August 27, 2012 · 9 comments

There’s a lot to be said for writing. Or blogging, or journalling, or keeping your thoughts locked tight in a diary. There are all forms of self therapy, are they not, even if we don’t intend them to be?

The best treatment– the only treatment, really, besides medication– for trauma and PTSD is repeated exposure to the event. Being triggered feel alike biting down on a sore tooth, nerves screaming in protest at the pain. Bite down often enough, and the nerve dies off.

Welcome to my blog. The place where I bite, just as hard as I can, on a daily basis.

Trauma almost always effects a person’s retention of memories… I do not remember the last Christmas day I spent with my husband. My memories for three months on either side of his death are a black void of fuzzy impressions, knowledge that I attempt to fill with colour. Even when I do manage to add some shade or tone to a confusing image made up of static, I can never hold onto it very long.

This is my memory book, the archive of my Purple Life, where I keep all the good things stored high on a shelf out of reach of this life After.

Since people have been able to write at all, they’ve made prose of pain and sadness, anger and frustration, longing and want and hurt. No one is ever as inclined to write the joyous emotions down– why would we, when the happy things are so easy to keep inside and close, a balm rather an acid?

But pain is better out, than in.

Count on your fingers the artsitic outlets available– music, visual art, dance and drama– writing is far by the most accessible. It needs nothing but a pen and a paper and a story that wants to be told. You don’t have to be talented to do it, it requires only basic skills that most of us have known since we were six or seven years old.

If you wish, writing requires no audience but your own. But while writing out the emotions and stories you hold within can be a balm, sharing them can be a blessing. Isolation is so debilitating. There is no greater solace than happening across words that may have have well of been your own, left for that very purpose, in the middle of an endless night or the greyest afternoon of your life.

I’ve learnt, over and over again, a lesson from blogging, from being so raw and honest that sometimes it hurts. I’ve learnt that no matter what it is, no matter how supposedly shameful or unique or incredulous whatever I’ve said or felt or philophised; there are always other people who feel or think or are willing to say out loud that I am not alone. That they know just how I’m feeling. That they not only sympathise but empathise, that they’ve been there themselves and come through OK.

There’s an incredible power in that. That’s why we tell stories of our lives– not just us, as bloggers, but the entire human race throughout civilization.

We want to connect. We want to know that we are akin to those around us, in more ways than are apparent on the surface. We seek to leave our mark, what we have learned from life, from any others who may pass this way.

If you’ve never read Wanderlust, please do. As a domestic violence survivor with a vested interest in the lives of children scarred by pedophilia, I won’t promise you her blog is always pleasant. (But if you’re reading RRSAHM already, then you should be fine, really.) But it’s heartfelt and real and beautifully written, and I can personally vouch for Kirstin, it’s author– she is one of my soul sisters, my closest online friends.

Wanderlust has begun a page that will, hopefully, act as a resource for people searching for solace on all those topics that are sometimes taboo. Suicide. Domestic violence. Child abuse. If you have a blog that you think would be appropriate, you can submit it for inclusion. Its grown from the simple heartbreak Kirstin felt whenever she checked her blog statistics and saw multiple hits for terms relating to surviving childhood sexual abuse.

I understand that disconcerting, heart wrenching pang. I feel it every time I see a search query in my own stats for ‘my family would be better off without me‘. And I do hope they always land on the post they need to read.

***

As I said last week– everyone needs a voice to speak. And everyone needs a place to be heard.

It’s some thing I believe right down in the soul of me. One of the most overlooked and indispensable tools for healing is the validation of whatever it is you’ve been through– the right to feel as though you and the thoughts and emotions you’re having are genuine, important and that you have a right to them. Having a community to act as a sounding board and bear witness to your pain in invaluable.

I take the knowledge and I think to myself, I am so blessed to have this place, this blog to call mine. A place where I can speak as freely as I wish. A community of (jellybeans) people who are my safety net, who have, once even before the day I asked them to, caught me every time I’ve fallen.

Not everyone has what I have. And, let’s face it, a blog is a big investment in time if you want a readership– I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.

All that naturally leads to the question of… what do you do, when you have a story to tell, and nowhere to tell it? When you can’t tell it for reasons of confidentiality? Or when you have told it so many times already that the people around you are sick of hearing it but the poison still hasn’t been quite leeched out?

Or when you just have something to say, a mark you would like to leave somewhere, your written word as testimony to a tiny slice of your life?

There has been a space created for this very purpose. It’s called ‘This Place Is Yours’… because it is.

I’m very honored to let y’all know I’ve been asked to be a ambassador for this charity. It will involve a website where people can submit– anonymously of they wish– whatever pieces they may have created that tell the story of them; be that a story spanning second or decades, one that is insignificant or life changing. Twice yearly the best submissions from the website will be published (that’s right– onto actual paper) on the form of a mook. That’s kind of a magazine, kind of a book. This Place Is Yours will also run creative workshops and classes and hopefully, eventually, develop into a support, artistic community all of its own. Somewhere where people can find other who are like minded. Where people can find solace and heart
strength in the stories of others, and through sharing their own.

This place is yours is still in its fundraising stage as of right now, and any money you can donate through the Pozible page is so greatly appreciated. Stay tuned. I will keep you updated as this place– your place– evolves and grows.

Because everyone needs a voice with which to speak. And a space for it to be heard.

This is exactly why I started my blog (finding myself young) – to be heard, to leave my mark, to feel connected and to look back on what I have learnt. I am trying to keep it relatively positive at the moment (mainly because I dont want to scare everyone off from reading it) but I have lots of emotions from dark places – suicide, abuse, domestic violence, divorce, infertility all the wonderfully crap things Ive experienced in life. I will get around to posting about them soon im sure. You are right, a blog is a huge time investment. I dont blog as often as I would like because of full time work, but I do love it. Its a tremendous release and my own free therapy. I love your blog and check daily :) Thanks for sharing your story.

Strangely I never seek out "pleasant" blogs, though i often gravitate towards books for pleasure. Frivilous, easy to read, paperbacks. I think I'm on the net to learn, to connect, to share. And I feel that most often with stories of struggle, sadness, strength, fortitude, triumph. I think it's how i learn and progress the most. And that's why i return to your story and to Krinstins story time and time again.

I need your prayers. – RRSAHM

I need your prayers.

by Lori Dwyer on January 6, 2011 · 343 comments

I don’t know how to write this post.

The Lori you know is gone.

My husband is currently in the Intensive Care Unit, fighting for his life.

He is in a critical condition. No one knows what will happen.

Please, I’m begging.

Pray for my husband. His name is Tony. His birthday was just yesterday. He has two tiny children who desperately need him. And a wife who loves him more than anything.

So, please. I need your prayers. Pray for my husband to be bought back to the family who needs him, who love desperately and unconditionally.

Every little bits. I need your help.

I’ll let you know as I do.

Thankyou.

Update: Sat 8th Jan, 10:14 am.

No news as yet. But the prognosis is not good. We are hoping, without getting our hopes up, and it’s a frightening, tortorous place to be.

Tony is still unresponsive, but I have reason to believe he can hear every word I say. I spent last night sleeping on a chair next to his bed. We held hands all night, just like we used to do when we first met.

My husband had a pyshcotic episode, and did something completley out of character. It was horrific to watch, and I can only imagine how tortured his own mind must be by what happened.

Please, keep praying. A tiny part of me believes miracles are possible. I can feel all your love and positive vibes. This- the Intenert, my communtiy- this is where I’ve been coming when the pain is so badf I cannot breathe. I read your messages, i feel your prayers, and it gives me faith and comfort.

Please, keep praying. Every little bit helps. My husband is a strong man- the toughest bloke I know-and he can fight this. I know he can.

I wrote a post like this once. When our second child stopped breathing, and my husband had to perform CPR, and the stupid paramedics took too long to get the tube into his throat, and he ended up in NICU, and he only continued breathing by way of machines. I sent out a request for prayer. And thousands around the world prayed. I believed in god, and miracles. I really did. I believed that god would answer those prayers. But he didn't. No miracle happened. The doctors decided that our son's brain was completely dead. They decided to take the machines away from him. Our son died in our arms. And I stopped believing in god and miracles. When our third child was born and also died, I didn't pray. There was no point.

Oh, Lori, I really feel for you. ((HUG)) I hope your man comes good, and I can honestly say I know how you feel. Although I am fortunate in that my partner is coming home from hospital today, so hopefully the good luck will rub off on you and your family too. Just take one day at a time, that's the best advice I can give you from someone who's had the same fears for her family.

Sin Eaters – RRSAHM

Sin Eaters

by Lori Dwyer on July 31, 2012 · 5 comments

Folklore tells us that ‘sin eaters’ are sourced from the lowest castes of society past– beggars, thieves, bastards, peasants, and probably single mothers and whores as well.

The task of the sin eater was simple– to relinquish the dead of their earthly misdeeds. The family placed water by the corpse of their beloved, bread was broken on their chest, salt sprinkled across their stomach.

The sin eater partakes of the bread and salt, quenches their thirst with the water. Depending on custom, tradition or rumor, sin eaters were paid a pittance, not at all, or took the pennies from the eyes of the deceased as their remittance.

Occasionally, I receive an email that haunts me, one that leaves an image that burns my retina like a bright flash.

(Orange rope, blue shirt; green plastic bag, red gas cylinder…)

I never dislike receiving them, never mind reading them. I just try to make sure I’m in a good place when I open them, so I am prepared… I make sure I open them on good days, so the effect they have on my afternoon will be minimal.

I understand… on so many levels, I get it. This is so rare, what I’ve seen, what we’ve been through; and it’s so taboo to be the one left behind, after a suicide. No one speaks about it, it seems. No one except me.

And I find hands reaching for me, constantly seeking me out in this darkness. People who have seen the same. People who have a picture in their mind somewhere, something ugly.

I take thehorrific pictures burned into their mind like shots from a bright camera flash along with my own burning pain and lock them away in place no one else can see. Somewhere where their ugliness won’t spill out and taint the entire world with it’s shrieking trauma, it’s enveloping velvet darkness.

(turn on the light an she’s just there, just ninety centimeters away hanging by her neck and my God she’s been there two days)
Evry comment and every email I get, from every person who reads my stuff, gives me something. Every one adds a tiny piece of happy, a tiny piece of OK, a tiny piece of self esteem… and they all build up to create a finger-knitted barrier of belief in myself. Something that helps me survive when everything else falls down.

But I will admit that some emails make me jealous, when I let myself be… jealous that others have me, where I did not. And instead of being locked up and held tight, my ugly truth was spread all over and everywhere.

It’s not that I’m ashamed of it– I never will be, I don’t think. It’s more a matter of the pity my reality inspires when I see it on the faces of people who know almost kills me some days. It’s the only thing that comes to close to breaking me, ever… seeing the reality of how very difficult this actually must be, in the stark normality of others eyes.

Shit Lori, sometimes you really give me goosebumps.
This one did.
I guess what I want to say is that when you were locked in a dark room with only your nightmare, you poured it out into the world, and in some small way, all the souls who read your words, followed your blog, or watched over you on social media, they tried, a little bit to soak up some of the pain, some of the horror you were feeling. And somewhere in a dark room, someone who has felt that same (the same, but not the same) nightmare, is pouring their heart into Google and there you are. Reluctant standard bearer for a truth that no one wants to speak about, or to hear. You didn't choose it, the motherfucker chose you.
But you have risen to the occasion in a way that is simply awe-inspiring. You'll find no pity here. I hate that this happened, I hate that it happened to you. I hate that it is happening right now to people all over the world. But I don't pity you. How can I pity you? You're awesome.

I wish you had had a place like this Lori, you've helped so many people. Sometimes we need someone to bear witness – and it sounds like you've done that for so many – shared their burden (as if your burden isn't heavy enough). what a remarkable woman you are.

You are a beacon, Lori. I'm so glad you're talking about this.

But you did have people Lori.
You did.

What you are doing though is so important. People need to read this, to see the aftermath.
It's so easy to move on and put that smile on and tell everyone you're good, you're ok. It's easy because you don't have to feel that wall go up, the awkward one. It's easy because you don't feel hurt when they don't do anything because they didn't know. But what you do, as helpless as I feel a lot of the time, is so brave and beautiful and admirable. Keep talking. Keep screaming. What you have been through isn't ok, but you…you're a bit alright you know?

Fireflies- Part One. #BloggersToBorneo

Day Three in Borneo

The sky reflected in Camp Leakey River.

The sky reflected in Camp Leakey River.

The first thing I see when I wake is a monkey.

It’s a long-tailed makak, the same kind of monkey that snuck into our klotok and stole bread the day before. He stands maybe forty centimeters tall, with his tail sticking up in the air as he walks.

He’s headed for the open door of our hotel room.

We’ve spent the night at the Rimba Eco-Lodge, the only accommodation available on the Sekonyer River. We have deluxe rooms- they not only have mosquito nets, but the beds themselves are spring mattresses, not foam; and the showers are hot. Cold showers and foam mattresses are much cheaper, but even then it’s twice the price of the hotel we’ve been staying at in Pangkalan Bun- without the ambiance of sleeping on board the boat.

Long-tailed makaks

Long-tailed makaks

I’ve come outside for a quick cigarette, to take in the early morning sunshine before we’re back on the river. The makak must have heard me open the door, because he appears almost immediately, on the roof of the rooms opposite ours.

“Erin!” I call out to my travel companion, my room-mate for the last few days, “Come and look at this!!”

“Oh wow!!” Erin is American, living in Oman. Her accent is awesome.

The makak leaps from one roof to another, then shimmies down the pole on the corner of the deck we’re standing on. I realise what he’s coming for, and slam the door shut just before he arrives. He sits on the chair directly outside the window and paws at it, aggravated that we’ve foiled his plans for an early morning snack and a rummage through our luggage.

The monkey gives us a slightly disgusted look, pivots and runs off. Back into the jungle, where he came from.

Today, we plant trees.

It’s part of a forest regeneration program, replanting native trees in an area devastated by fire just a few years earlier. We can choose what we wish to plant. There’s ironwood, slow growing but momentously strong, and sandalwood, harvested to make perfume. There are trees that support the orangutans, who can eat their fruit, leaves, bark and seeds. Trees that provide natural medicine, their roots boiled and the liquid drunk to ease the ache and shiver of malarial fever.

There’s a whole medicinal garden here, in fact- the Dayak people of Borneo knew their jungle plants, and the ailments they cured; and that knowledge, while perhaps distilled, has not been lost as time passes. I stare at the plaques hammered into the ground on wooden stakes, fascinated- there is so much potential here. Plants to treat itch, infection, conjunctivitis and sore throats. So many uses, so many cures. So many medicines that could be explored.

The medicine garden.

The medicine garden.

It’s blisteringly hot today, none of the cooling rain of yesterday. I’ve soaked a sarong and my hat in river water, but they’re both almost dry by the time we walk the one kilometre of rotting, lichen-ed jungle boardwalk to the planting station. When not under the shaded, dappled canopy of the jungle, the sun beats down with unimaginable force. It’s too hot, even for me, who’s been basking in the thirty five degree weather.

The ranger at the planting station lives alone in a tiny hut with only a rambling litter of Bornean short-tailed kittens for company. He’s lovely, helping us choose trees and selling us bracelets woven of from palm fronds. We pay 50 000 rupiah- about five dollars- for each tree we plant, and we sign the guest book on his front porch. It’s sad to see the last date written in was two weeks ago. There aren’t a lot of tourists here- we’ve seen eight, maybe nine other white folks during the river trek and orang feedings- but it’s evident that not a whole lot of them come for tree-planting.

It should be compulsory, says Erin, and I have to agree. Planting the tree itself is merely symbolic- it’s the money we pay to do it that’s important, funding the rehabilitation of the jungle.

I choose a sandalwood for me, because it’s one of my favorite fragrances- it’s a perfume my mum used to wear.

Then I select and ironwood. For someone that I used to know. Because he’ll never be here, in this place so far away from where we existed.

It feels like tying off a thread.

Ironwood is used for building- boats and houses, wharf and sheds. They grow slowly, just one centimeter a year.

I whisper a tiny prayer as I pack the dirt around the sapling’s roots.

There might be tears on my cheeks. Or it might just be the endless, dripping sweat; a product of standing too long underneath the hot Indonesian sun.

There are three feeding stations for orangutans in Tajung Puting National Park. They serve to subsidise the foraging efforts of the orangs, whose natural food sources are rapidly disappearing. The orangs at Camp Leakey, the third feeding station, are accustomed to humans- Dr Gildakris lived in close proximity to them for years, and they are comfortable around people.

The orangutans at the first and second stations are not so used to having people in their space, and that’s apparent in the way they move. They are quicker, less trusting, keep their distance more.

rrsahm3

They’re amazingly beautiful.

A huge male sits outside the roped-off area where the platform is, drinking milk from a bucket. He leans down and puts his whole head inside it, and we can hear the slurping, smacking sounds as he drinks. He splits tiny bananas sideways, chews messily and swallows. He has massive cheek pads jutting out from each side of his face. Ivend tells us that he used to be the alpha-male of this station, but now, following a fight for the top position, he’s been usurped. It’s strange to see such an enormous animal looking almost timid- he hears the sound of another orang approaching and thumps away quickly, slowly and gingerly returning as he sees it’s a female with her baby, not the reigning alpha male or anyone else who poses a threat.

rrsahm5

We watch a mother orang easily navigate her way up the tree behind behind the platform, and her baby scrambles to follow her. As she reaches the top she rocks the tree, swinging it back and forth until she manages to grab the branches adjacent to her. She then hangs there, her wide arms making a bridge for her baby to crawl across.

Up close, orangutans are just as gorgeous as you would imagine. Long, lanky legs and arms. Pot-bellies. Wiry red hair that covers their backs, limbs and heads.

And their eyes. They are molten, deep pools of brown that stare into your soul. They seem to hold the secrets of a thousand years in the jungle.

***

Walking to and from the first feeding station, we see a tiny cemetery, set back from the track. Like everything else in Borneo, it’s beautifully coloured- all the markers are pastel candy colours, pinks and blues, soft yellows and greens. It’s a quiet, serene place; tucked just outside the boundaries of the trail, bright green foliage partly obscuring it from sight.

Twenty or thirty years ago, there was a village here, where we are now. When this area was marked for conservation, when it became Tanjung Puting National Park, the entire tiny village was packed up and moved to the other side of the river.

Only the graves, this tiny cemetery with decades of bodies interned, remains.

You have such a gift: reading this I almost feel the heat, can nearly smell the rich earth and tree smell of the jungle. I’m glad you planted trees, I’m glad it felt cathartic.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us, I cannot wait to hear more.
