Partial Nudity at the Public Pool – RRSAHM
Partial Nudity at the Public Pool
A very chilled out Sunday to y’all,
Well, for your amusement, I am kinda pleased to share a brand new entry in the ‘Stupid Things Lori Does’ files. This one is hot and fresh- in fact, it happened yesterday morning, just after the Chop finished his swim lesson.
Allow me to set the scene- Chop and I jump out of the pool, a bit chilly and teeth a-chattering, and make a beeline for a change room. Change rooms are hotly contested property after swim lessons on a Saturday. Especially the ones with showers. If you’re not on the ball, you will find yourself and your little one braving tinea and frozen appendages in one of the unheated, communal changing dungeons.

Yesterday was our lucky day- a cubicle, with a shower, all to ourselves. I quickly throw on my clothes, stick the Chop’s hooded Elmo towel over his head, and pull up his Pull-Up.
That’s when I hear a sad sound. The sound of teeth chattering, just outside the cubicle door.
So, being the bleeding bloody heart I am, I throw open the door. And there is a Good Dad, waiting with his Freezing Daughter, for the very change room we are occupying.
What’s a Good Samaritan to do, when we are dry and relatively warm, and Freezing Daughter is beginning to turn shades of purple? I flash him my bestest smile.
“All yours. The little one can get dressed out here, he’s not modest”.
Good Dad falters. “Uuuhhh, are you sure? We don’t mind waiting.”
“No, no, go ahead, it’s fine.”
“Errrmmm, no, it’s OK.”
“No, really, take the change room, mate”.
Good Dad blushes, fumbles and manoeuvres Freezing Daughter into the cubicle. I do my patented head shake.
What is wrong with this bloke, resisting the offer of a muchly coveted change room-with-shower?
That’s when it hits me.
I know what’s wrong.
In my Good Samaritan haste, I have neglected to put a shirt on.
And am wearing only a bra.

Internet Dating v 3.0- Dear Brad. – RRSAHM
Internet Dating v 3.0- Dear Brad.
It’s not really that I’m particularly offended by the fact that you are going “to be keeping to yourself for a while. Laying low and focusing getting priorities and head/health together”. After all, that’s perfectly understandable.
It’s not even that I think you might just be full of sh*t when you say that, given that your internet dating profile states you are ‘Holding out’ and you confessed, on our very first date, that “dating online makes finding sex easier, but finding love more difficult. If you don’t like everything about that person, there’s another fifty women out there that might do it for you.”
And, truly– and it’s taken me time to be able to say this in all honesty– it’s not even that I feel like a total dick for not cutting and running at the exact moment you said that. And, honestly, it’s not because I feel, sordidly, like I’ve been used for your pleasure. No, really, it’s not.
It’s more to do with the fact that you told all about how you’ve thinking about where you “are atm” (sic), and that you “hope I understand” by text message, less than twelve hours after parting company with me.
And, really, it’s the fact that you didn’t even have the man-balls to answer the phone after that.
Finally– although I totally get you’re not responsible for the behavior of the entire male species– I just will never understand why you men feel the need to go putting yourself all over Internet dating websites saying how you’re ‘looking for something long term’ and ‘want a relationship’…
And then consider where you’re at and whether you really want one at all? Surely that’s something that could have been bought to my attention f*cking YESTERDAY?
Or is this just the new way of saying that same old thing, “it’s not you, it’s me”?
Whatever. I don’t f*cking know. And, quite frankly, I’m too pissed off and disillusioned to care. Although I do remember telling you that only the real arseholes make it onto my blog…
Welcome.
Yours sincerely,
Douche.
*This may not be Brad’s real name. But it’s quite likely that it is.

Some men do bail out if the sex doesnt go to a pre envisaged scheme concocted in their heads.. It could be as simple as a wild experience for one who has only ever had soft nurturous encounters, or other issues more pedantic.
I met an inspiring young lady once and was taken by her clairvoyant like abilities. Interacting with her was an eye opening experience which seemed to bring on more questions than answers. Sadly, upon getting to the horizontal waltz part of the introductry phase, she started to roll her eyes into the back of her head and shake all over. Sadly, that WTF situation along with some excess hair was enough for me to end the encounter with the "Its not you its me" scenario… Happy to admit to being fickle

I can't help wonder if it is his real name now. lol

Oh hon, I'm sorry.
You deserve much, much better than this. Too bad we can't leave reviews on someone's dating profile.

Hey Lori
I get your post notifications by email. Well, that was just a little trippy seeing 'Dear Brad' in the title. Then, I got real annoyed. The guy doesn't deserve a name like that. It puts all us Brads in a bad light.
I do hope someone eventually comes along that isn't a complete douche/cock/dickhead/arsewipe.
Love and hugs,
Brad (not *that* Brad) -

Brad's an eejit. I'm sorry.
I hate dating as a single mom. Especially since online dating was my only way to meet people – it's poor form to bring kids to a bar, apparently. Who knew?
I got lucky and met my boyfriend online, and we've been together for 3 years now. I still freak out and think he'll break up with me and I'll have to start dating again. No fun.
I hope you can find a good guy sooner rather than later.

Dear Brad,
You don't know how much you're missing. Really.
-
November 15, 2012 at 9:51 am -
Ugh. Hugs for you, middle finger for Brad. There are ways to do these things honourably, and by text, then refusing to answer the phone, isn't one of them.
-
November 14, 2012 at 11:13 pm -
Aw, Lori, that SUCKS. I know it's hard. If you need to take a break and enjoy singledom for a while, take a break. Just never forget that you are loved and very much deserving of that love. HUG!
PS: I never have trusted those Brads…

Dating is hard, and it sucks in my opinion! I don't find it fun at all but stressful and scary! I am yet to meet someone from online dating who isn't just after sex, it really frustrates me.
-
November 14, 2012 at 4:16 pm -
Not that I want to be on his side, but I think this -(dating online makes finding sex easier, but finding love more difficult. If you don't like everything about that person, there's another fifty women out there that might do it for you) is a pretty true statement.
-
November 14, 2012 at 11:49 am -
You know what gets me? It's not the lying anymore (as House says> Everybody lies) but what really gets me it's the disappearing act, one day they are at your full service/attention (phone, mails, txts, everything) next day there is only silence, and you try to contact them but nothing it's like *puff they just disappeared!

BRAD = TOOL. That's all.

November 14, 2012 at 9:48 am -
Aaah, men. There are a lot of toads out there, and a few princes too. It's a numbers game I think.

November 14, 2012 at 8:40 am -
…when people say they hate a thing, then do exactly that…
It just makes me seethe.
Don't lose faith in the male half of the species, despite their constants efforts to inspire you to do just that. There are good ones out there, it's just that they are often obscured by masses of indecisive fuckwits.
-
November 14, 2012 at 11:19 am -
Sucks to be you, Brad.
Now the whole female species know how much of a twat you are.
Again, sucks to be you.Hugs Lori xo

SuperHeroes – RRSAHM
SuperHeroes
I may or not be Internet dating again.
Why? Because I am a glutton for punishment. Obviously.
Those of you who worry for me will be relieved to know that’s it a bit… different, this time around. I’ve been burnt and hurt, and that makes you cautious. But, hell, I’ve also shed a skin and had to upload a batch of new, pixie cut photos to the dating site. And that makes me different too.
In a strange kind of oxymoron, I’m not taking anything at all- internet dating included- quite so seriously this time around. But in the same breath, I’m being pickier than I was last time around (you don’t need to sleep with every man who wants to, Lori- just because someone asks you something doesn’t mean the answer is ‘yes’), and that’s proving to be a lot more fun. I’m sure that revelation will be much to dismay of the man with the evidently very small penis who went on a Twitter rant after I posted this guide on Internet Dating- What Not To Do; stating that if I ‘wanted a husband’ (not particularly) I should ‘compromise’ and ‘lower my standards’. Douche. (There were, to my dismay, quite a few blokes who were less than happy with that post. I apologise, gentlemen, I didn’t mean to offend. It’s not you, it’s me. If I were dating women I’d whinge just as much, but probably about different things.)
As I said, I’m having fun. More fun than last time I played this game- and let’s keep in mind, online dating is a game. I’ve actually found myself a litmus test- a question that doesn’t definitively define whether things go beyond the inevitably seedy online dating site to become text, which becomes a phone call and then, maybe, a date; but it certainly helps weed out the men who just aren’t going to make me laugh. And that is a constant for me- you make me laugh, I’m yours.
With that in mind, I’ve taken to asking…
Simple and childish, I know. And don’t get me wrong (crazy woman), I don’t go running around messaging people randomly with “Hi! I’m Lori! Who’s your favorite superhero!?” But after a bit of back and forth banter, I don’t think that’s an unacceptable question. And the response really does tell you an awful lot about a person.
Some men are- probably quite understandably- baffled by the question. “What do you mean?” and “Why do you ask?” are answers that just don’t suit me. Not that there’s anything wrong with either of those responses, really. But I believe life, and people in particular, are all about the little things. The finer details of whose your favorite superhero, what’s your favorite song right now and whether you prefer peanut butter or Vegemite are just as vital to who you are as your job, your age or where you live. None of those are discriminating factors either- but if you can’t understand why I’m asking, I don’t think you’ll get where I’m at. And I doubt you’ll make me giggle.
Likewise, if the answer is “I don’t have a favorite superhero. Allow me to brush off that question and return to chatting about mundane things like work and food”– or something to that effect- well… that tells me that this person is probably not going to be a lot of fun. That simple. It would take some really sparkling conversation to change my mind after an answer like that… and I haven’t found it happen yet.
Happily, most guys answer my question with good humor. The most common answer, in case you’re wondering, is Batman. There has yet to be a Superman. Bonus points go to blokes who answer with any of the X-Men. Because if I were a superhero, I’d be Rogue.
![]() |
| From FanPop. And I don’t care what you say, Anna is way better than cartoon Rogue and her bad hair that needs a to be hit with a straightener. |
I loved her since I was a kid, and I still love her now. For no other reason than she rocks that grey streak. And I may need to emulate that cool at some point in the near future. (Nothing to do with the way she can’t touch people because she hurts them Really.)
![]() |
| And Lori Rogue. Or something. Heh. |
And that’s what I answer, on the rare occurrence that someone actually asks me the question in return. That, by the way, is still my main complaint… conversation is an art form, true. But the basics are question-answer-response-question, rinse and repeat. Most men leave out the ‘question’ part altogether. It’s difficult, trying to carry on a one sided conversation, especially through a screen. Most of the time, I don’t bother.
Anyway. That’s me. What I want to know from you, jellybeans, for a matter of my own curiosity…

That Twitter guy is an idiot. Don't ever lower your standards.
Batman is my favorite superhero. He's a bit of a loner, his life is shrouded in mystery, and he doesn't do anything for reward. I think Superman does his thing to pick up chics! (Just kidding!)

I'm ashamed to say I never dabbled in superheros. Batman, Superman, Incredible Hulk, Batman and Robin (package deal), Wonderwoman, Cat Woman and Isis. Can't say I ever got into it though… i know the question is for fun and and an opener to a conversation. I guess I'd make a bad date. I think if I had to pick it would be someone not particularly super from my own life… although people dissapoint I had two women in my life that were human… Gloria and Maggie. One is still alive and one has died. They saved my ass more than once. I might add here that if any of you have women or men in your life who are just quite wonderful.. give them a call and tell them they are your superhero's. They need to hear it and then I love you would be a wonderful thing too.

Gambit, hands down. Awesome powers, dark history and good with the ladies. Plus he's a Cajun, so he'll know what good food is.

I have to have more than one! For females, Wonder Woman came to mind (like other Lori) but then someone mentioned Buffy and I couldn't believe I forgot her. So, I'm torn there. And if I was going to be a superhero, I'd be the mum from No Ordinary Family, I'd love that super-speed! So much to do, so little time.
As for males, Cannonball from the New Mutants was always my favorite. Although Cyclops is a close second.

I'm very tempted to answer Captain Underpants, but I'm not 100% on that. This may need more thought.

Oh I am giggling so hard right now cause I just ask my husband what super hero he would be. He said spiderman then he said well actually my first thought was The Greatest American Hero!!!!
Mine is She-ra. -

Great post Lori!
My favourite changes … Sometimes it's CatWoman, sometimes it's Tank Girl. Other times its Buffy.
I just realised something – these are all women who have no choice in fighting against the evil that jurst them.

Kellogsville is so right lol. I just asked mine & after a bit of thought…(30seconds) SUPERMAN!!! YAY. His favourite films are, just in case you were wondering… "Finding Nemo" & "Taken". Maybe 'coz they're both about fatherhood & protecting kids. For me, Dick Tracy. He's the only other person I know who spells Tracy the same way I do

Spongebob isn't really a Superhero hey. Well, maybe not to yooo!!
Yes, Spongebob rode 'The Hoff'& he has a starfish for a besty. That's a hero
Other than Him, that ice making dude in The Incredibles. He was cool (woops). -

Clearly my new favorite superhero is Lori Rogue! That photo is quite AWESOME. Prior to that, though, I'd have to give the nod to Wonder Woman as a childhood favorite, and Storm from the XMen as an adolescent favorite. I've always wanted to control the weather …

February 24, 2012 at 8:46 pm -
Would you believe i actually asked Mick that same question our second date? We went to see " Watchmen " ( i'm a bit of a superhero/graphic novel film kind of gal ) and though our answers for favourite were different ( his is Superman, mine is definately Batman ) we did agree on #2 – Wolverine. It must be love!
-
February 24, 2012 at 8:42 pm -
I'd have to go old school and stick with Superman, I think.
Partly because he was probably the first superhero I was aware of, because my older brother liked the films, and because one of my biggest treats as a kid was being allowed to play the Superman III board game (it was my brother's and therefore in the not-allowed-to-touch-without-permission category) and I loved the flippable pieces in it. Sad? Possibly.
These days I'm still a fan because a) his alter ego is a geeky writer type, b) he doesn't quite fit in and it irks him, and c) nothing says awesome and invokes confidence like a big red cape (or analogous item of clothing).
So I guess I like him because I empathise, not because I want him or want to be him.
And thinking of my "point c" I've recalled that I own red leather boots that look rather like wellies, that I wear when I need a Superman-esque boost. And a matching underwear set that are blue with red trim and have a big Superman logo on each.
I think I like Superman even more than I thought I did.
Good question, Lori! Gets the thought processes well and truly churning!

Superman – because, as a kid I thought that he (as clark kent) reminded me of my Dad. Especially when he was wearing his boggly round glasses. He turns into something amazing….just like I thought of my Dad. I still get a bit squidgy when I see Christopher Reeve, and I'm proud of it! – he tugs as my heart strings.
-
February 24, 2012 at 7:57 pm -
When I was internet dating (I'm still single, I just gave up), I asked this question too!! My profile had a pic of me with the real Batmobile so it wasn't hard for them to guess mine.
But my reasoning is because he has no super powers. He does good, not because he was accidentally bestowed with amazing powers, but because he thinks it's the right thing to do and he just wants to make the world a better place. *sigh* I heart Batman so much! -
February 24, 2012 at 6:08 pm -
Oh and to answer the question…..Buffy the Vampire Slayer!
-
February 24, 2012 at 6:06 pm -
I'm totally failing at Internet dating right now. I'm too scared to contact anyone, have got photos up where I think I look way skinnier than I really am plus I fear I'm not the same conversationalist that I used to be. You seem to at least get hits from decent guys – or are you brave enough to be the one that contacts them first??
-
February 24, 2012 at 4:01 pm -
Clearly you and I are made for each other, I ALWAYS loved Gambit… in fact, I may have had such a thing for him that I *may* have changed the spelling of his last name to make my LeBeaux pseudonym… *cough*
-
February 24, 2012 at 2:25 pm -
Oh man- I would be a complete epic fail at internet dating. *shudder*
For me it's Wonder Woman. That gal can rock a bustier (is that how it's spelled?? It doesn't look right). And she's curvy and owns it! -
February 24, 2012 at 1:57 pm -
I've never seen the X-men (I know, strange huh?), but I'd have to say my fave hero is Superman.
The way he flew around the world to make it spin backwards and go back in time to save Lois from the earthquake… *sigh* My hero!
And here I am… showing my age!
-
February 24, 2012 at 1:33 pm -
I love X-Men. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine? *drools* And that is the ONLY time I will admit to drooling over Hugh. I just think they got the cast so fucking spot on for the movies.
I also love Jean from those movies.
Another superhero I love of sorts I guess is Elektra. It'd be a toss up between her and Lara Croft for my favourite superhero's. I like some girls with balls.
-
February 24, 2012 at 1:33 pm -
Flash! Ah ahhhhhh! Saviour of the universe!
Hubby is a huge Phantom fan.
This is a cool litmus test, cos not only does it show if they even know what a superhero is, but if they spend their time angling for a hint from you as to what you want the answer to be… they are probably manipulating users.
-
February 24, 2012 at 10:58 am -
Yay for having fun and not taking it seriously
as for my favourite super hero…. I LOVE X-Men! All of them!! But if I had to pick a favourite it would be Wolverine. -
February 24, 2012 at 10:40 am -
Thumbs up to internet dating! My husband and I have been together 5 years after meeting on the internet and he is the love of my life!
I say 'Go for it Lori, what have you got to lose' Just have fun! -
February 24, 2012 at 9:43 am -
Does Leia count as a superhero? No? Yeah…didn't think so.
Then I'd say Katniss Everdeen…crap! She's not a superhero either, is she?!
Current obsession that's only in book form but soon to be a film – Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.
Otherwise, I'd just say Professor X because I got this thing for Patrick Stewart…I'd have his babies if he asked.
I love that you ask a random, fun question. It really does a fantastic job of weeding out the one's you just aren't going to have fun with.
-
February 24, 2012 at 9:26 am -
I dont think its a silly question at all. I have known from the moment I met my hubby who is fave hero is – Spiderman. Our house is covered in blue and red. Although he's 30 he still loves him. He even has spiderman tattooed down his forearm in chinese (he may possibly be nerdy lol).
Internet dating is very hit and miss. You have to be more picky than when meeting someone in person because it is easier to hide behind a computer screen.
Never lower your expectations, you are worth far more than that!!Goodluck with it, maybe this time you might find someone a little special.

women all over are now asking their other halves who their favourite superhero is. I just asked mine – I told him he wouldn't get a date with you!! Incidentally when I complained he didn't ask back he actually asked "who's hers then?" ! he still didn't actually ask me LOL and in answer to your question mine is Shrek!

Crap-tastic movie review- I Love You Too
Howdy do and welcome to the first ever RRSAHM crap-tastic movie review. Believe me when I say, this will probably not be a regular event. This is the first time I’ve been to the movies in months and no one wants to read the reviews of the pirated DVD’s I’ve finally gotten around to watching six months after we get them movies that have been out for ages. This is a one off. Keep calm and carry on.
The basic plot goes like this- Jim has had a gorgeous girlfriend for three and a half years now, but can’t tell her he loves her. Which kind of makes him a loser. Enter a bunch of other losers, a short guy and a supermodel, and hilarity ensues. As it so often does.

Heidi ho,
I’ve noticed a definite trend in my photography.

The Chop, doing his lizard thing.

The Man, doing his Manly thing.

And a coupla of piccies from the “Mirror Was Broken Before We Got Here” series.

I’m going to put it down to some kind of psycho-babble vanity-issue-slash-affirmation- I am reflected, therefore, I am (not a vampire or a ghost. Good thing, that).

Random Ramblings of a SAHM: Falling Into Place
Random Ramblings of a SAHM: Falling Into Place
My Dodie Boy. – RRSAHM
My Dodie Boy.
Nom nom,
My little Chop, at two and half has been a hardcore dummy addict for most of his life. That’s a ‘soother’ or a ‘pacifier’, I think, for the non-Aussies. The Chop was given a dummy by a midwife when he was 24 hours old. I had buzzed her, desperate- why would this small, undeniably cute but wriggling, screaming child not sleep? Surely 4 hours was a very long time for a newborn to have been awake….?
“Do you have any objections to a dummy?”
Erm… I think, maybe, I did have, at one stage. Whatever. Right now I just needed to get my exhausted, battered body and muddled mind off to sleep.
The Chop slept for three blessed hours that night, with his dummy firmly plugged in his mouth. It was one of the longest stretches of sleep he had for the next eight months. And he and his precious ‘dodie’ were, from that point on, the best of friends. When he stopped breastfeeding at fourteen months old, he got really attached to it. And after his sister was born, when he was 21 months old, it almost broke my heart to see how much he needed that comfort when my hands were otherwise full.
Despite all the very positive things his friend the dodie did for him, the Chop was showing all the signs of a serious addiction. He wanted his dummy all the time. He would get agitated if he could see it but couldn’t get to it. He’d even tell me about the adventures of his dodie when he got from Mummy’s Respite Day While The Chop Plays With The Nice Ladies At The DayCare Centre.
And me? I’m the enabler. As many dramas as the silly thing caused it if got lost, dirty, broken, or- heaven forbid- forgotten, I just couldn’t bring myself to take away the cheap, multi-colored piece of plastic that bought the little guy so much comfort.
So imagine my surprise when we picked him up from Mummy’s Respite Day and discovered he hadn’t had his dodie all day. Even for a sleep.
Hmm.
“Do you think, if the dummy fairy came and bought you a present, she could take your dodies away? You’re a big boy now, you don’t need them anymore. Maybe the fairy will take them for some babies who need them?”
The Chop looks at me. He’s sizing me up, estimating the strength of my resolve and how much bargaining room he has to wiggle around in. I’m sure of it.
“Fairy come, take dodies, bring chocolate eggs?”
OK, kid, deal-io. I can’t argue with that.
Best of luck, Man, sourcing chocolate eggs at this time of year. But hey, you volunteered to fetch the bribery.
Long story, short (not… really?) the dummy fairy will be visiting us in the Purple House just as soon as the Chop wakes up from his nap, or the Man gets home from work with the required bribery supplies.
I’ll let you know how the trade off goes.
And I’m not 100% sure how I feel about trading a comfort object for food. Surely that can’t be healthy….?
I’ll have to think on that one a bit more. I’ll let you know how that goes, too.

In case you wanted to know all of the names for a 'dummy' across the globe, here in Michigan we call it a Binky or a Paci.
And, good luck. My son never had one, so I don't even have words of wisdom to share.
Just good mommy vibes to you. -

This brings back memories! My son (who is 8 now), used his "soother" until he was 3 years old, (and I must confess that it wasn't just for sleeping, he used it through out the day too), but his play school teacher said he wasn't allowed to bring it to school, and that was the magic turning point, he gave it up himself.
I bet the dummy fairy will be a huge success – it sounds like he's ready, if he's bargaining! -

OMG – I am totally living your life at the moment! Cleo is soooooo addicted to her dummy! Grandma tried eating three of them. It kinds worked – until she went to the store and found another one! Looking forward to hearing your results

I will be intrigued to see how it goes. Doo Dah still has his for sleeping (he's 3.5 years!). I have never tried to get him to give them up because he is the only boy in this house who actually sleeps! I know I am taking the easy way out, but I can't see how a couple of dummies in his bed at night is such a terrible thing? He just loves them. LOVES them. But never out of bed

Sorry. You wrote his age. Mine is about 3 months older.
Didn't read it properly the first time. (I hate it when people ask me a question that makes it apparent they didn't read it properly).

I have a confession. With Boy#1, we had no real trouble phasing it out. We made the decision and that was it. Done.
Boy #2 is more than 8 months older than Boy #1 was when we phased his out. I have no idea how on earth we're going to approach the subject. None.
So. Will be looking with interest to see how you go. How old is yours?

Flynn has a dummy – his is called his " binky " – but i'm already starting to phase it out. Sometimes he wants it in while he settles before fallin asleep, sometimes he doesnt; he likes playing with it but 9 times out of 10 now he'll clamp his mouth shut if i try and wedge in there to stop him crying. I figure if we can get rid of it while we're learning to self-settle than its gotta be easier than the Fairy taking it later down the road…

How interesting, the Nuk in Perth Australia is the hardest dummy brand to get hold of. My 2 year also had an addiction to her dummy. The ultimate comfort for her. One day I got cranky and threw it across the room (think sleep deprivation and her excuse not to talk when she has it in her mouth)… long story short 9 days of bad tantrums and screaming sessions now sees the dummy only at sleep time. If she wants it she gets into bed and has it and then comes back again and its working really well for us. We even leave it on her pillow in her bed and she just leaves it there, doesn't even try and sneak it anymore. So I wish you much luck with getting rid of it, or at least reducing its need. We did it and survived! hahahahaha

I think if the pacifier is a comfort to him, it's a harmless attachment. My first one had a "dummy" as you call it until he was almost 3. When he no longer needed it, he threw it away himself, with no coaxing from me. My second one never took to the dummy; his comfort was his blanket. He carried that around until he was almost 3 and it was reduced to a straggly 6 inche remnant of what it had been; he also threw that away when he no longer wanted it.
-
July 28, 2010 at 3:00 pm -
you guys call it a "dummy"? Why??????? I've always called it a paci, but here in the upper Midwest of America they seem to call it a "nuk" after the brand name.

A Very Long Memory – RRSAHM
A Very Long Memory
My children, they love to look at photos.
Most children do, I think? And now, especially for my little Chop, photos are a very important way of remembering Daddy. A remembrance, to trip our conversations and our memories.
I wonder if it hurts my little man, in the same way it does me, to look at pictures of Tony. A bitter sweet sting. An ache that just won’t go away.
I look at photos of him, I can smell the sweetness of his breath. I can taste the salty, warm skin of his shoulder, that was so big and rounded, tattooed and solid.
Sometimes I can taste the vaseline on my lips from the very last time I kissed him, mixed with a sour scent that proved to me his body was slowly dieing.
Tonight, while we waited for a batch of cupcakes to go golden brown in our outdated, slow cooking stove; my children and I pulled out photo albums and sat flicking through them.
My daughter, she will be two years old in a few months time. Her father has been dead for five months now.
So why am I so shocked, why does it feel like cold water in my face, when I realise she no longer points to pictures of her daddy?
Her nonna, her brother, me, Thomas the tank Engine… but I say “Bump, who’s that?” and she doesn’t point, doesn’t laugh or gurgle or attempt butchered pronunciation. She looks straight past him. In one photo, I watch as she points to me, Chop… and then, when I prompt here, an Iggle Piggle toy sitting in the background.
She no longer recognises her father’s face.
I know…. the inevitability of that should have been obvious. Such a tiny little thing when he passed away. It is unlikely- highly unlikely- that the Bump will ever have any organic memories of her own father. Surely, she will know all about him… I’ll make sure of that. But her memory of him will largely be one generated by myself, her brother, and our extended family.
Not a memory of her own making.
Some days, I try to remember, to freeze in time, the exact developmental stage my children were at when Tony passed away. The Chop, being older… he was much the same as now, but his comprehension of abstract subjects in amazing, his language blows me away and he speaks now of feelings and emotions- I’m not sure if that would have happened despite his father’s death, or not.
The Bump…? Five months is such a long time when you’re a one year old. A big girl now, she has all her teeth. her hair is long enough to put in a tiny, spiky ponytail, and I wept as i first did that, because I know tony would have adored it. She says words now- Tony never heard her speak- and she runs, rather than waddling along.
All this, he has missed. It’s a tiny fraction of what he will miss. And I feel the need to keep tabs on it, to pay extra special attention to their milestones since the lost their father.
Maybe it’s because I know there is only me as a memory bank for my children now. The comfort of having a back up… the pleasure of having someone to reminisce on my most private moments with. My son, he is still very much my husbands…. but my daughter, she is beginning to feel like mine and only mine, because I am the only one to testify to her daily growing up.
Parenting as a sovereignty… I’m discovering that, among so many other things, it requires a very good memory.

In our home, these are known as second hand memories. I lost a good part of my memory following an illness years ago and so alot of my memory bank was refilled by family and friends showing me photos and re-telling stories again and again. Whilst i have to admit they are not quite the same as the real thing, they are still very precious to me. Bump may not remember her Daddy in the traditional sense but the memories that you and your family build for her are no less valid. For what it's worth, i think you are doing a great job – hugs.

I was 2 years old the day my granddad died.. and I remember it clearly. I was climbing onto his lap to say goodbye and my mum took me off before I could. I remember I was mad at her because I hadn't done anything wrong. And then he was gone and I understood that too.. and was heartbroken because I never got to say goodbye.
It still surprises me how aware I was back then.
Bump may remember far too much. Hold her tightly.

she might not remember…. but it will be your job to bring those memories alive when she is ready. Through photos, and telling your kids all about Tony. Even this blog. One day, she will feel his presence watching over her. She will feel his love – through you. *big hugs Lori*

One day, many years from now, your Bump might read your blog. And she will read the "Before", and hear your wonderful, happy voice ringing clearly through your words. And then she might read the "After", and hear the love you have for her and Chop, and Tony too. Whatever she reads, she will know she had a Daddy who loved her, and a Mummy who loves her still. xxxxxx

As always, my heart goes out to you and your kids. I'm always left speechless after reading your posts. Somehow anything I would write here just seems hollow and meaningless. I've been left with tears in my eyes after reading several of your posts, and this one did the same.
When my daughter was 19 months old and fighting for her life, I wondered if pictures of her short life would sustain my memories of her or would I always have that last mental picture of her lying in the hospital with wires and tubes coming off her.
I don't have any great words of wisdom or comfort for you outside of…I think you are wonderful and outstanding. And I'm sure that is rubbing off on your kids as well. Take care.
-
June 3, 2011 at 10:28 pm -
"bump" will always have reminders of her dad by looking to you and your son.
It might not help- but my first solid memory is from when I was about a year old – she might remember. You do not know.
Either way, you will show her who her father was through stories, shared memories and more and she will look back on photos fondly in years to come and piece things together for herself.
-

That's heartbreaking. Watching your littles grow and change is wonerful and so sad. Such a poignant reminder of the progress of time. Oh this post left me with an ache for you today. Hang in there. Sending hugs.

June 3, 2011 at 8:24 pm -
As long as you remember Tony at his best, your daughter will always have reminders of him. They might not be her own memories, but 2nd hand stories will be enough to keep his memory alive in her…

So very hard, to remember everything for everyone. So be the only person in your childrens' life – and not by choice. Lori, your blog is amazing as always, and I know that I'm feeling like needing support when I read yours, and then wonder why I do – cause you do. All the best

Tony is the one missing out. Don't feel bad, because you are not.
My Lily is the same age as your Bump. Each day there are new milestones. My husband works long hours and misses out on a lot of those milestones but at the end of the day he doesn't. I'm sorry your husband is.

Keep it up with the photos and talking about what happened in each photo. I never met my Gran but I have always felt bonded to her from listening to the love in people's voices as they told me about each photo of her.

It's important to document those things, it's surprising how much we don't remember as the years go by, and it's a gift to hand those memories to your children.

Doona Days – RRSAHM
Doona Days
I’m asked, not long ago, if I still have ‘doona days’, just over two years after the fact…do I still have days where I can’t face the world, and need to curl up and hide?
When I open my mouth to answer, I’m amazed to hear myself reply “Some days…” and that be truth, or close to it. A few months ago my answer might well have been “every day” and, sadly, that would have been truth too.
Not that they’re so much ‘doona days’, in the essence of staying in bed and crying as though my heart was broken, blinds closed and dark and sleeping away painful hours in a warm, tepid darkness. That idea is so deliciously tempting… I think that’s why I don’t do it. One day spent in bed like that, wallowing in my own self pity… that would undoubtedly lead to more.
And it’s entirely possible that could lead to never, ever grappling myself from beneath my sheets again.
But I still have so many days where I’m… not really here. And, ironically, I feel them much more keenly now that I have some kind of happiness in place again, because they occur with less frequency. I can pick one or two bad days within a row of good days, rather than the other way around.
But bad days are dank and cold and stagnant water littered with the worst of human existence. Bad days are steamroller flat, the only way to deal with the screaming trauma within to freeze everything, to stop feeling anything at all.
And then watch from a distance while it hurts.
It feels like watching a dog eat at itself, gnaw at it’s own wound until it removes an entire foot. And there’s nothing the conscious me– nor anyone around me– can do. Because bitches in such frenzied agony… they bite.
It’s on bad days that the trauma symptoms burn my skin, my soul. The simplest things (a NutriGrain box, printed with the CPR chart, it sits there for days looking at me from stoop father cupboard until I have to get rid of it, it has to go… the sensation of purple skin, of blood trickling from a locked jaw… it becomes far too intense to bare) set me off, force that already terrified five year old in my mind to become hysterical, convulsive, so panicked she can barely breath through her screaming.
And on bad days– days like today– I’m taken back to those first few days. There’s the same sense of not being real, of this not being real– not so much a dream as another universe, an alternate dimension. I find myself paying alarming, exquisite attention to my own body parts– my feet, my hands, my face in the mirror. I watch my fingers clip pegs onto wet washing spread across the clothesline of my sunny, leafy backyard; and time stops, the world pauses spinning for a moment.
I look back at my life, the last two years, the last five years, the last ten, the last thirty… and I wonder when I began dreaming. I wonder when I was locked up, sedated. I wonder when this coma started, how much life I’ve lost, will I remember what is surely a very normal existence, once I return to it…?
Because this can’t be me, this can’t possibly be real. Some days I’m sure of that… How could this happen to someone, really? Someone normal, like me? It has to be a dream, a placebo, spread out on the spider-web of someone else’s psychosis.
Some days, clearly, I am losing my f*cking mind.
I guess this is called ‘coping’, because I’m doing it. I’m told it’s ‘healthy’– the evidence, the hypothesis, is in the results.
I’m getting better, from what I can tell. The ‘doona days’– probably more aptly titled the ‘losing my mind’ days– they are happening less and less.

Travel Bugs. – RRSAHM
Travel Bugs.
I have caught some kind of travel bug, and seem to have infected my children as well.
I’ve been more places, and travelled more distance, in the last year than in the total of my thirty one years before that. Borneo. Bali. The Great Ocean Road. Every town between Melbourne and Sydney. The eternal sunshine of Cobram and Shepparton. The Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, the Alps in Victoria.
Last night we caught a boat to Tasmania. We’re going to the Tarkine- they say it’s one of the most remote, untouched places in Australia. One of the school mums got back from Tassie not long ago, and when I asked her how it was she replied in a hushed, reverent tone “Wild. Its wild, down there…”
The kidlets are excited, happy little travel bugs always ready to explore a new place, see new things. They are consummate little voyagers. I have supply-buying, packing, and hotel routines down to a veritable modern dance of flexibility, planning, and parenting.
I don’t think I did a lot of travelling as a kid, or as a teenager, or as a twenty-something uni student. It was always superficially a matter of cost, but it came down more to being afraid than anything else. I’m not even sure what I was afraid of exactly, and I didn’t want to admit to anyone that I was scared.
I want to give my kids the chance to not be afraid of travelling the way I was. Because going new places and seeing new things… it’s good for the soul.
So far, so good. As long as we can manage it, we’ll explore as far and wide as we can.
And as you’re reading this, we’re in Tasmania. A place we’ve never been before. The place where the wild things are.

I live about 10 minutes away from Melbourne airport – if I had any flares (damn me not being a soccer fan!) I would set one off so you would know you were driving in the right direction! Have fun at Blogopolis – wish I was going so I could say hi (with about 300 others!)
Cheers, Skye -

You would have probably passed by my place on your way to the airport.
Welcome anyway.

Ditto to driving on the wet tram tracks. Hook turns used to freak me out until I figured them out properly – you're just getting in front of the traffic going across the intersection (left to right), so that when the lights go red you get to go first, hopefully before THEIR traffic lights go green, LOL.
Now I don't even know if that makes sense. Anyway, they are only in the CBD. You can always keep going left.
Narre to the airport should be an hour drive. Not so bad really. I'm 20 mins sideways from there, in the Dandenong Ranges. Will be pottering about Brunswick St with my adelaide friend tomorrow before the blogopolis drinks thingy! I love pottering about in Melbourne, I hope you enjoy it! Fun!

P.S.: I used to a set of black stationery and different colored bright pens, but the silver one was my favorite. Whoa, leave yourself plenty of time for that trip, as Narre Warren is about as far from the airport as you can get! Yikes! And you wont need to do a hook turn on your way, so don't worry
I've lived in Melbourne all my life and my inlaws who live in rural Victoria are still terrified of hook turns and driving with trams (or the big scary green things as they call them!) but you really only need to do hook turns in the CBD and where we live, we don't go near too many trams! Basic rule of thumb, if they stop, you stop! (So you don't run over the people getting off!)
And enjoy our shops. You'll love getting lost in our laneways when you get in to the CBD.

Then MummyTime passed FlogYoBlog onto RRSAHM. And the whole thing went to crap from there.
Seriously, though, if you are new here, you can check out all the technical instructions here. And welcome. FlogYoBlog is the biggest non-specific Aussie blog hop- you can link up anything you like. The linky list is populated with a cast of truly awesome bloggers. The only rule anyone pays any attention to is to spread the love. (That’d be Rule Number Five, for those of you playing at home.)
And, yeeeeeessss, I know it’s New Years Eve. Happy New Years!! I will be home by 9pm tonight. Like the total loser responsible parent I am. And I’m running FlogYoBlog Friday for all of you who are doing the same.
And, that’s it. It’s been a good year, yes? 2011 will be even better, I guess. I have just one piece of advice for you. I learnt it the hard way on Wednesday. No matter how much your ex-boyfriend may look like Bear Grylls, and how much Man vs Wild you’ve been watching on YouTube, do not call fore mentioned ex-boyfriend. It will only end badly. In tears. With you feeling like you’re 15 years old again. Prick.
- Follow my blog, the Random Ramblings of a SAHM. I never seem to get to reading all the links here. But believe me, I try. Not that any of this is my idea anyway- FYBF is MummyTime’s brainbaby. I stole it.
- Grab the bubbly button and post it on your sidebar.
- Link your First Name and/or Blog Name and URL of your post or blog.
- Add a short description (max of 125 chars). It could be a description of yourself, your blog or a teaser to your latest post. .
- Follow at least 1 linkyer/blogger (Be nice and spread the love).
- The list will be open for linkyers on Fridays (and for the foreigners Friday as well).
- A new and fresh link list will open every Friday. And you will have to link up AGAIN. The previous link list does not carry over to the following week.
- And lastly, have lotsa fun. I mean it. If I detect anyone not totally loving the awesomeness, I will bump you off the linky list. (Joking) (Kinda).
- Ripping off my stuff- including these rules- makes baby Jesus cry. if you are doing your own blog hop, please write your own rules. You know who you are.

Ooh..I liked the movie 'ExTerminators' this year (thinking of someone in particular) Still, I believe thinking of some exes can bring fond and pleasant memories of the past, but that's all they should be in our lives : memories.
Happy New Year, Lori & readers !

I don't know what this says about me, but I'm not friends with any exes. Not that I have a load of them. A friend once ran in to an ex of mine and he wanted me to email him, but I didn't. What's the point? I have too many lovely people in my life that I don't get to see enough of!
It's a new year soon, hon. Enjoy.
Happy new year!xxxx

So you fancy Bear Grylls do ya? He seems a bit unhinged and god the places that man's mouth has been…it would turn me off all that biting heads off trouts. But I'm sure you'd be the one to tame him and say 'look Gryll you know you can buy frozen fish in the supermarket you know you don't have to catch it with your bare hands.'
happy new year darling – I will be staying in on NYE like a sad wanker too so you're in good company!

I think that I just might be a bigger loser than you. Do not even plan to leave the house. Just watch glimpses of the fireworks from my front porch and then collapse into bed. Exciting times!
And I have just signed up for your blogflog.
Thanks,

How Do Colour Changing Candles Work? – RRSAHM
How Do Colour Changing Candles Work?
Houses develop their own particular scent. Every house has a smell to it, pleasant or not. The structure of the house itself is only partly responsible for the scent it takes on. Most of the smell belongs to the house’s occupants.
When I was little my auntie’s house always smelled divine. Heavy and comforting and slightly cloying, it smelt like cinnamon and sandalwood, and kitschy 80′s washed hessian wall-hangings.
As a general rule, you don’t smell your own house. You’re there to often. But I’ve been away from my house for two or three day stretches often enough in the last six months to come to a somewhat shameful realisation.
My house smells a little bit like ‘crazy cat lady’.
That’s not very cool.
To be honest, we’re not going to be here much longer, anyway. It seems we’re moving to Melbourne very, very soon (more on that tomorrow). Scented candles seem to be a very useful temporary solution. Cue the Air Wick Black Edition Multicolour Candle.
And this candle is right up there with lava lamps in terms of ‘trippy’. It actually kaleidoscopes through different colours. Check out the five second video here.
It’s certainly a conversation piece. It’s been a source of fascination to me and everyone else who visited the TinyTrainHouse in the last week or so. How does it work…? How far down would it burn? How the hell does it work?
We got experimental. After exposing the candle to various light and heat sources, we determined it was heat activated. But that still didn’t really solve the mystery.
Not knowing how things work frustrates me. I’m sure I could have Googled the answer. But that didn’t seem like nearly as much fun as pulling the candle apart and finding out for myself.
So. Step one, which was surprisingly easy- removing the candle from it’s black glass jar.
Step two. Cut the candle in half.
And that was as far as we needed to go, really before the answer to one of life’s biggest questions was revealed. How does the color change candle work…?
Two wicks- a normal candle wick, and a wick coated in thicker wax that appears to be the heat sensor. Three light globes in the base of the candle- one red, one green, one blue, that light up in patterns to produce different colours.
Mystery, solved. Just call me Daphne. Or, slightly more realistically, Velma.
